"It is a beautiful venue with rolling grassy hills and acres of woods with hiking and mountain biking trails. They have full hookup RV sites along with dry ones and multiple tent camping options! They also have free wifi along with a brand new 9 hole disc golf course," according to Stafford W.
Lake activities: Douthat State Park Campground provides kayak rentals and fishing opportunities on its lake. "The lake is nice, and there is nice hiking along the shore," shares Thomas R. Another camper adds, "In season the lake and creek are stocked with plenty of Rainbow trout. You can keep them for dinner if you like! Just follow all DNR laws on size and amount!"

Privacy between sites: Greenbrier State Forest offers well-spaced camping areas. "The sites are well-appointed, well-maintained, wooded, and peaceful. The bathroom and shower facility is super clean and maintained daily, each campsite even has its own trashcan with daily trash pick up," says Anthony I.
Peaceful rural settings: Summer Wind RV Park provides quiet countryside views with minimal noise. "Amazingly beautiful! Relaxing! quiet! Recharge here! Full hook ups, dog friendly, very level gravel site with a stunning view of the pastures," reports Kelly N. Another visitor notes, "This campground has views of the West Virginia mountains and overlooks a cow pasture. So much fun to stay at."
Honesty-based systems: Several campgrounds in the region use self-service payment methods. At Summer Wind RV Park, "Booking was a little strange, there's no website or confirmation. You pay by check in a lockbox. But there was plenty of room and everything worked out fine," shares Whistle P.

Limited connectivity options: Cell and internet service varies widely between campgrounds. At Summer Wind RV Park, one camper reports "AT&T and Verizon both 5 bars. Sit & watch deer in the valley most mornings." However, at Greenbrier State Forest, "The dense tree canopy blocked StarLink satellite connection at our site."
Narrow access roads: Reaching some campgrounds requires careful navigation. At Greenbrier State Forest, "Accessing the campground involves driving 3 miles off I-64 on State 60/14, Harts Run Rd, a winding and narrow two-lane road, which might be a challenge for larger RV trailers and motorhomes," warns John H.
Weather considerations: Summer storms can impact camping plans in the mountains. At Greenbrier State Forest, one camper mentioned, "Overall, we enjoyed our stay, although heavy thunder showers on 3 nights interrupted sitting by the campfire."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Glen Maury Park offers family-friendly facilities. "There is a pavilion with tables. There is a playground that is very nice! They offer entertainment on weekends and some other times of the year," says Sara L.
Pool availability: Douthat State Park Campground maintains a swimming area for families. "In season the lake and creek are stocked with plenty of Rainbow trout. You can keep them for dinner if you like," notes John R., who adds, "Some spots include clean bathrooms, hot showers, soda machines, fish fillet tables, picnic tables, fire pits and so on."
Indoor activities for rainy days: Explore Park offers both indoor and outdoor options for families. "Our family loved this campground! It is close to Roanoke and it is off the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is located in Explore Park. This park is growing by leaps and bounds. It has mountain bike trails, a cool vintage village, access to the Roanoke River, an aerial obstacle course, and more cool stuff," shares Bridget H.
Tips from RVers
Level sites for easier setup: RV campers recommend checking site grades before booking. At Natural Bridge-Lexington KOA, staff assists with positioning: "They even guided you to your site and help you level," notes Ron H.
Year-round availability: While many campgrounds close seasonally, certain RV parks remain open throughout winter. At Don's Cab-Inns Campground, Stephen D. appreciates it as "One of the few campgrounds open during the winter with facilities."
Water system preparation: Winter camping requires additional preparation for RV systems. At Sweetwater RV Park, one visitor noted, "Really well thought out campground for RV. Plenty of pull through and back in sites. Level sites, utilities are well placed and good height."
