Getting to camp in Millcreek Canyon requires some planning. The canyon charges a vehicle fee at the entrance, and as of mid-2025, the road was closed 3.5 miles in with no posted reopening date, so checking current conditions before the drive is worth the effort. Camping here is walk-in only: Forest Service rules require sites to be at least a half-mile from any road and 200 feet from developed areas and water. No car camping or RVs. The season typically opens July 1.
Once in, campers find dispersed sites scattered across ridgelines and canyon terrain within Wasatch National Forest. Millcreek Creek runs through the area, and reviewers mention kids wading and tubing in calmer stretches. Moose and deer sightings are common enough that multiple visitors mention them. The Lambs Canyon Trailhead gives access to shaded terrain with open sightlines down into Salt Lake Valley from the saddle, while Church Fork provides another solid approach route.
"Millcreek is a great escape from the city," notes Dan G., and the canyon's proximity to Salt Lake makes it a practical option for a quick overnight. Dogs are allowed, which reviewers flag as a meaningful distinction since many nearby canyons do not permit pets. Fall gets a specific nod for timing. Camping is free, toilets are available, and campfires are permitted.
Campers wanting a more structured setup nearby might consider Millcreek Canyon Dispersed Camping or Jordan Pines for a group-oriented alternative.
