Uinta National Forest's Hobble Right Fork Dispersed sits along a gravel and dirt road system in the mountains above Mapleton, offering free camping across multiple pull-offs and clearings. The area is managed by the US Forest Service and draws campers from the Wasatch Front who want a quick overnight stop without a long drive. Cell reception drops out at the start of Hobble Creek, so downloading a map beforehand is essential.
Road conditions determine how far in you can go. The main gravel road is accessible to sedans and SUVs, but a side dirt road branches off for those wanting more privacy and less foot traffic. That spur rewards higher-clearance vehicles, and carrying a spare tire is a practical precaution given the rough surface. The further you travel from the main road, the more space opens up between sites, though free-range cattle roam throughout the area, including on the roads themselves.
Sites further back include fire pits, and campfires are permitted when no burn ban is in effect. Elevation keeps nights cool even in summer. The canyon mixes open meadows with tree cover, and low light pollution makes the night sky a draw. Dispersed Camping on Hobble Creek Road lies just to the east for those who want to compare options along the same corridor, and Balsam (uinta-wasatch-cache National Forest, Ut) provides a developed alternative a couple of miles west. As connor P. notes, "lower light pollution makes the stars pretty visible and there's lots of wildlife as well." Campers who can handle an unpaved approach and some bovine company will find Hobble Right Fork a solid no-cost base in the campgrounds around Uinta National Forest.
