A dirt road off Highway 40, south of Heber City toward Main Canyon, marks the entry point to this free dispersed area within Uinta National Forest. Pull-off sites begin almost immediately once you leave the pavement, and they continue for several miles up the canyon. The road gets progressively rougher. Campers with standard clearance vehicles can access the lower stretches without issue, but reviewers consistently warn that reaching the marked coordinates requires a high-clearance 4x4, with at least one group bottoming out on a culvert drop-off further up.
Spots along the lower road can accommodate a range of setups. As Jenny R. notes, "it can accommodate single tents, multiple tents, RVs (obviously no hookups) and trailers." Several reviewers point to the "Big Glade" meadow area, roughly two miles in, as a flat alternative with multiple sites. Trees are dense enough to hang a hammock, and existing rock fire rings mark previously used spots. A portable toilet is maintained near the entrance, and a dumpster has been added for trash. There is no potable water on site, so campers need to arrive with enough supply or carry a filter for the small stream running through the area.
ATV, OHV, and dirt bike traffic is the most frequently mentioned drawback. The canyon serves as an off-road access corridor, and riders begin moving through early, often by 8 a.m. Dust and noise are a real factor during busy weekends. That said, Mk A. describes the experience as "pretty private, occasional main road traffic but not much" when stopping a couple miles in on a quieter day. One reviewer also reported a bear on their vehicle overnight, so food storage deserves attention here.
Weekends fill up. Arriving midweek improves the odds of finding a flat, sheltered spot without neighbors. Nearby paid alternatives include Lodgepole Campsite about 3.5 miles east, and Uinta NF Dispersed near Harrys Reservoir roughly three miles southeast for those wanting more options in the same corridor. Cell service is available. Ticks have been reported in warmer months, so checking clothing after time in the brush is worth adding to the routine.
This site works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with rough roads, variable noise levels, and a no-frills setup in exchange for free overnight access to the Wasatch backcountry.
