Fish Lake National Forest

Fish Lake is one of Utah's premier fishing destinations. The lake is known for its trophy-sized lake trout, rainbow trout, splake, and yellow perch. Fishing is productive year-round, with ice fishing popular during winter months. Shore fishing works well in many areas, while boat fishing allows access to deeper waters where larger trout typically reside. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources regularly stocks the lake, maintaining healthy fish populations. For current regulations and limits, check with the Utah DWR before your trip. Nearby streams and smaller lakes in the national forest also offer additional fishing opportunities.

Fishlake National Forest offers several excellent dispersed camping spots. There are multiple pull-through sites with beautiful views just off I-70. Some campers prefer the spots that face west for stunning sunset views. As you travel along the forest roads, you'll find 3-4 additional nice spots if you continue past the main area. The roads are generally accessible, though some sections have washboard conditions. Many sites offer privacy and a sense of remoteness despite being relatively close to the highway. The dispersed areas typically provide plenty of space for larger rigs and feature gorgeous mountain views.

The best times to camp at Fish Lake are late spring through early fall. Summer (June through August) offers warm days perfect for fishing and water activities, though this is also the busiest period. May and September provide more moderate temperatures and fewer crowds. Fall brings spectacular foliage as the aspen trees change color. Winter camping is possible for those prepared for snow and cold, especially for ice fishing enthusiasts. Spring can be muddy as snow melts, so check road conditions before traveling. Weather at higher elevations can change quickly in any season, so always bring layers regardless of when you visit.

No permits are required for dispersed camping in Fishlake National Forest. Camping is free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Standard dispersed camping rules apply: use existing sites, camp at least 100 feet from water sources, and follow Leave No Trace principles.
