Joy Ranch Cowboy Campground provides electric hookups and accommodates both tents and RVs in a peaceful setting outside Watertown, South Dakota. The campground lacks dedicated horse corrals but allows pets and maintains trash facilities. Alcohol is permitted, and campfires are allowed at designated sites with picnic tables. The property includes sanitary dump stations and water hookups for RVs. Horse owners should bring portable corrals or tie-out equipment as the campground does not offer permanent equine facilities. The quiet, beautiful atmosphere makes it suitable for families camping with horses who have their own containment systems.

The park features electrical hookups and accommodates tent camping, RVs, and cabins. Campsites are relatively flat with pebble beach access and walking areas. While the campground does not have permanent horse corrals, it provides clean shower facilities, toilets, and drinking water. Weekdays typically offer quieter camping experiences compared to busy weekends when the campground fills with families. Reservations are recommended, especially for those traveling with horses who need specific parking considerations.

      Pelican Lake Recreation Area

      Super nice place

The sites is very well maintained with what look to be a number of new investments like trails, docks, shooting range for bows. It was early in the season so bathrooms weren't open but the spigots were on and the pit toilets were clean. Nice lake views and a few short trails for hiking or horses. Boat dock for big boats, fishermen and canoeing. Might be super busy in summer but early season was beautiful.

      Sica Hollow State Park Campground

I think this area is surprising

This is a horse campground with very basic services. Trash, pit toilets, corals but there are well maintained trails that go throughout and streams and small waterfalls. Some of the most interesting hiking on this end of the state. Only 11 or so spots and very little shade and it has been surprisingly busy. I will do as much as I can on the trail system.

      Pelican Lake Recreation Area

Family Friendly, too many cars on Friday

Nice pebble beach, playgrounds, and walking areas. Flat camper parking. Power was great and showers were clean. Electric only. There is an area to dump waste on the exit. Stopped on Sunday on the way westward and the place was empty, stopped Friday on the way home and it was packed. Lots of kids and families, and almost every spot was full. Happy to see folks having fun. It was just a little busy for us. On the second time through one of the three bathrooms was very dirty, sad before the weekend- the showers remained clean. On the Friday stop there were a lot of people, some spots had 3-4 cars parked in the grass- it was too bad they allowed that. If one was to go here to find some quiet do so during the week or late weekend. It worked just fine as a quick overnight stop on our route. Lots of families having fun. Slept well. Well groomed area. Pretty views of lake. A little windy.

      Lac qui Parle County Park

Lower campground quiet and shaded. Upper campground great view.

Good primitive sites with fire rings and picnic tables. Water tap available. Pit restrooms, one of which is is poorly maintained and to be avoided. Parked on wide expanse of grassy area. Trails to nearby river. Some gravel roads to get to site, but well-maintained. Suggested fee of $20/night. Ideal for one-night stay while en route.

      Lac qui Parle County Park

Beautiful views from the Upper Campground

We had a lovely weekend overlooking Lac Qui Parle from our campsite. The lack of mature trees on the upper campground bluffs is a plus. A gentle breeze keeps the bugs down and allows for nice views. We have a 26’ travel trailer and got 2 bars of T-Mobile 5G service.

      Pomme De Terre Campground

      Flooded!

We stayed on the Pittsburgh side and found the campground amazing! Until it flooded. We were evacuated and moved to higher ground. The spot we had first was 311 and it was great until it flooded. Camping spot was shaded with plenty of room. Nice shower house and plenty of bathrooms. Could have proved to be a nightmare week was actually a blast partially due to the wonderful park staff. All in all a great week!
