Description
Black Hills National Forest's ponderosa pine country along Calumet Road (FSR 392) holds a cluster of forest-road pullouts minutes from Mount Rushmore in a quiet corridor that feels well removed from the tourist corridor below. Multiple spots along the spur accommodate a couple of vehicles each, with enough tree cover for shade and hammocking, while the surrounding landscape brings grazing cattle, crickets, and — worth noting — rattlesnakes in the rocky hillside above. The access spur is manageable for high-clearance vans and 2WD rigs with care at the entrance bump, though the tighter spots favor smaller setups; a few more forgiving pullouts sit on or just off Calumet itself for larger rigs.
