Paris Mountain State Park contains one of the Upstate's more unusual campgrounds, a 40-site facility built by the Civilian Conservation Corps that sits tucked behind a Greenville neighborhood, far enough from the city to feel removed but close enough that downtown is a short drive. The park encompasses four lakes, a network of hiking and mountain biking trails, and a sand beach at Lake Placid. As Shelly S. puts it, it's "a very well maintained, very old CCC built camp near Greenville, SC."
The campground layout is worth understanding before you arrive. Sites are a mix of pull-throughs, back-ins, and tent-only pads, and a notable number of them are unlevel. Shade is consistent throughout, with heavy tree cover across most of the loop. Sites toward the middle of the campground sit close together, and campers report hearing neighbors easily. Reviewers also note train noise through the night, a factor worth considering if you're a light sleeper. The two bathhouses draw consistent praise for cleanliness. No pets are allowed in the campground.
Activities include hiking trails that connect to the lakes and dam, a volleyball net, a playground, and seasonal canoe and paddleboat rentals at Lake Placid. Mountain bikers share most trails with hikers, though they are restricted on Saturdays. For those willing to hike in roughly two miles, primitive lakeside sites at North Lake offer a different experience entirely. "The hike in is about 2ish miles of moderately difficult trails," notes Bryan M., with a walk across the North Lake dam along the way.
The access road is narrow and winding, which creates real challenges for larger rigs. A 31-foot Class A has made it through, but multiple reviewers flag difficulty for medium and large trailers. RVs up to 40 feet are technically accommodated, with electric and water hookups at all sites. Reservations are available, weekends carry a two-night minimum, and the campground fills on busy weekends. For camping near Taylors or elsewhere in the region, The Dyrt lists additional options worth comparing before you book.
Description
Camping at Paris Mountain
Overnighters can stay in one of the 40 campsites that Paris Mountain has to offer. Located away from the park's lake and a majority of the hiking trails, the campground provides a peaceful forest retreat.
Paris Mountain is a monadnock, which is an isolated rock hill, ridge or small mountain that rises abruptly from an otherwise level land area. At one point the park's lake, Lake Placid, was a main water source for the growing town of Greenville.
