Hikers heading north on the Appalachian Trail through the Lehigh Gap area have a practical overnight option before the gap itself: a large, flat group site managed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission within SGL 217. No water is available at the site, so carrying enough from a lower source is essential. The site sits slightly off the trail and requires attention to spot, but once found it provides multiple established tent areas and fire spots. It drains reasonably well after rain. No fee, pets allowed, and cell service is noted. Nearby, the George W. Outerbridge AT Shelter offers another option along the same corridor. This site makes the most sense for groups doing a multi-day AT section who need flat, free ground before tackling the gap.
