Managed by the US Forest Service within Winema National Forest, Forest Road 960 by Pacific Crest Trail PCT is a dispersed camping area in the Diamond Lake region of Oregon where campers self-select spots along a gravel forest road that climbs to rocky outcroppings with open sightlines. The road itself is accessible enough for most vehicles on the lower sections, but 4WD is necessary for reaching the elevated sites up on the rocks. One reviewer pulled a 15-foot trailer to the top using 4WD, noting ample turnaround space despite a steep climb.
The upper end of FR 960 gives campers wide-open sky exposure, which works well for solar setups and satellite internet. Campfires are permitted, and multiple fire rings scattered across the area reflect consistent use by previous visitors. Temperatures in early October have been reported in the mid-60s during the day and dropping to around 40°F at night. Summer visits come with a significant caveat: mosquitoes can be severe, particularly in July, with at least one group reporting conditions bad enough to force them to relocate.
Pets are allowed on-site. Nearby dispersed options include Winema NF Dispersed off FR 1300-610 near Summit Rock about 0.4 miles southeast, and Mount Thielsen Wilderness sits directly to the east for those looking to extend their time in the area. Justin L. describes the top as having "wide open sky for solar and starlink," which is worth noting for campers who need connectivity. Bring insect repellent if visiting in summer.
