Tent camping options near Grove City, Ohio include several primitive sites focused on backpacking and riverside experiences. Scioto Grove Metro Park offers free, reservable backpacking campsites along the Scioto River with tent pads and fire rings. Additional tent camping can be found at Jacoby Road Canoe Launch along the Little Miami River and at Old Stone Church Trailhead in the Wayne National Forest.

Most tent sites in this region are primitive with minimal amenities. Scioto Grove's backpacking sites provide tent pads, fire rings, and complimentary firewood, but require hiking in from the parking area. Sites are available only on weekends during limited seasons, typically closing during winter. Jacoby Road Canoe Launch features picnic tables and fire pits but lacks drinking water and trash facilities. Campers must pack in all necessary water and pack out all waste. Most locations require advance reservations through county or metro park websites, with permits displayed in vehicles.

The backpacking experience at Scioto Grove offers a unique opportunity to test gear on shorter trails while enjoying riverside camping. The five designated sites are spaced for privacy, with those farther from the main park areas receiving less foot traffic from day visitors. Similar seclusion can be found at Old Stone Church Trailhead, where tent camping areas feature well-maintained, marked sites. "Scioto Grove is great if you're looking to test out some new backpacking gear. There are 5 reservable sites along the river trail and they all have tent pads and a fire pit, besides that they're totally primitive." Water access is a highlight at several locations, with tent sites positioned near the Scioto River, Little Miami River, or smaller creeks that provide both scenery and recreation opportunities.

      Alum Creek State Park Campground

      Nice Suburban Campground

Right close to Columbus this campground is a staple for locals trying to just get away for the weekend. There is an amphitheater, a camper’s beach, nature center, and more all within the campground. Alum creek state park is a larger facility surrounding the campground with a public beach, walking paths, mountain bike trails, archery range, hunting areas, boat marina and more. The public beach is rather gravelly but has nice shower houses and grills available. We are attending during fall fest where they put on many activities for the campers and it is a lot of fun. You have to reserve 6 months in advance to be able to get in on fall fest unless there is a last minute cancellation. Our site is relatively flat parking, we didn’t need to level the rig. It did rain the morning we got here and the area around the fire pit was a bit muddy. The view out the back of this camp site is nice and wooded, you’re not looking at your neighbors out the back window. The sides you can definitely see each other but it’s still wooded and secluded enough between the sites here.

      A. W. Marion State Park Campground

      Site 47

We managed to get several sites near each other for 6-7 families and we had a blast. Near bathrooms, quiet, and within walking distance of the kayak launch.

      Delaware State Park Campground

      Love this one!

Great campground. My favorite is each loop has their own shower house! Nice playgrounds for kids. Nice private sites. Lots of woods and trails. Good lake for boating fishing and kayaking. Park is very clean and well maintained. They have a kids fishing pond! It’s also great for biking.

      Tar Hollow State Park Campground

      Super Relaxing and Peaceful

We used Site 53, which is a pull thru. The site was spacious and level. The fire pit location is across a tiny stream; we enjoyed a campfire in the woods! There were no loud folks. The loudest thing we heard was the occasional bark of a dog (which we didn't mind).

The restrooms were new and extremely clean. The staff at the camp store was friendly.

There are plenty of places and opportunities to enjoy Pine Lake: you can sit on a bench or rent a canoe.

We'd love to return to Tar Hollow when the fall foliage is beautiful.

Campbell Cove RV Resort & Campground

Pine trees, lake, and great spots!

This campground is located near major roads and within a quick trip to Hocking Hills State Park. Tents spots are located near the lake and provide pine tree shaded cover. Bathrooms are private and very clean!

      Mt Gilead State Park Campground

      Peaceful stop off I 71

My husband and I had an overnight stay here on our way to Indy. Sites were level and easy to navigate, with fire rings and picnic tables. Lots of trees and trails. Though the majestic pines were tall, they offered little for privacy. Bathrooms were clean and showers were free. However, the touchless feature made showering difficult as you have to stand directly in front of the sensor to keep the water running which means you must bear the cold water until it heats up. Neither of us had an enjoyable shower experience. Playground for the kiddos and a volleyball court. All around a nice stay.

      Ohio State Park Camping

This is a small campground. Typical state park sites--you will have neighbors/see and hear other people. There is a non-electric section, which I like for tent camping. The electric section is all RV's, this non-electric section is all tents and a little quieter, except if you're near the playground. Campsites all have picnic tables and fire rings, and are decently sized. All pretty flat and mostly wooded/part shade.

    Guide to Grove City

Tent camping opportunities in Grove City, Ohio center around riverside settings within a 40-mile radius of the city. The region features transitional forest zones characteristic of central Ohio, with elevations ranging from 700-900 feet and a humid continental climate. Summer temperatures typically reach 80-85°F with moderate humidity, creating favorable conditions for overnight camping from April through October.

    What to do

Explore riverside trails: Visitors to Scioto Grove Metro Park can hike along the REI River Trail while testing backpacking gear. "Need to reserve online, books up very fast. Got lucky and found an opening for site 5 which was right on river and away from the busier parts of park - didn't see a single person," notes Anna S.

Water activities: At Waters Edge Canoe Livery, campers can combine tent camping with paddling experiences. "Very fun place to camp and enjoy the creek on a kayak or canoe. Very friendly staff, and one of my favorite places to go," reports Jonathan W. Canoe and kayak rentals are available for $25-45 depending on trip length.

Avoid crowds: For those seeking seclusion, the tent sites at Greene County Jacoby Road Canoe Launch provide quieter alternatives to busier parks. "This site was so low key and didn't have a lot of people. We saw a few cars and trucks during our weekend as it is a canoe launch. Locals also will stop here to hike and avoid the crowds in town," explains Kenpocentaur K.

    What campers like

Easy accessibility: The tent camping areas at Old Stone Church Trailhead receive positive feedback for their maintenance and organization. "Beautiful. Nicely maintained. Well marked. Parking can be on side of road or down below where campsites are," notes Christy P.

Riverside camping: Tent sites positioned directly beside water access points are consistently mentioned as highlights. "Beautiful spot for tent camping right next to the Little Miami River. Picnic tables and fire pit are also nice amenities," reports Logan at Jacoby Road Canoe Launch.

Testing gear: Novice backpackers appreciate opportunities to practice skills without committing to longer trips. "Free reserve ahead weekend backpacking campsites. All sites have 2 tent pads, a fire ring and firewood provided. Some have log seating and some do not," Susan G. mentions about Scioto Grove Metro Park.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds in this region have specific scheduling limitations. "Only weekend stays and it ends in wintertime. I'm sure it's pretty and all, but it's hard to find legit, free dispersed camping in Ohio!" Joaquim P. notes about Scioto Grove Metro Park.

Primitive conditions: Most tent camping sites near Grove City have minimal facilities. "The porta john was clean and we did see a park ranger a few times during our visit. The sheriff also drove through at one time. Their presence was visible and a short friendly wave to us," explains Kenpocentaur K. about Greene County Jacoby Road Canoe Launch.

Water management: Pack in all needed drinking water as most primitive sites lack potable water sources. "It is also important to know that the site does not have electricity or clean drinking water. You will need to bring in the water that you will need for cooking and cleaning during your stay," cautions a reviewer at Jacoby Road.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly features: When tent camping near Grove City with children, seek out sites with natural play elements. "Somewhere among the hustle and bustle and just outside Columbus you can find this hidden gem of a park in Grove City. Backpacking sites, rope bridge crossing over a creek that kids and adults would love to explore," suggests Karen K.

Proximity options: For families new to tent camping, Geneva Hills Camp offers an intermediate experience between primitive and developed camping. "Tent site was nice. We could make dinner and there weren't any mosquitoes even though it was right above a swamp. It was a nice driving distance from Hocking Hills and a neat place to camp," shares A.B.

Seasonal planning: Schedule family tent camping trips during shoulder seasons (May-June or September-early October) when insect activity is reduced and temperatures more moderate for young campers. "The reservation service fee was very reasonable and is less than what ODNR charges for their online reservations," notes a camper regarding county park reservation systems.

    Tips from RVers

Smaller rigs only: RV camping options near Grove City are limited to smaller trailers and campers. At Old Stone Church Campground, "Easy pull-thru site for our small travel trailer. Each pull-thru is set-up for horses, but RVs are allowed (according to NFS website)," reports Tammy F.

Plan for primitive conditions: RVers should prepare for self-contained camping. "The only facilities here were a single pit toilet (surprisingly clean) and a trash can at each site. There may be more services during the height of the season, at least water for horses, but nothing else I could tell," continues Tammy F.

Cell service considerations: Working remotely may be possible at select locations. "I had good 4G ATT cell service. Worked well, with no drops. Data was a bit slower than usual but still good," notes an RVer staying in the Wayne National Forest area.
