    South Ruby Campground

    Remote and awesome 👌

I found this camp ground on my way to Montana, just wanted to stop for a night and be in the middle of nowhere. I have a rav4 and it made it out there on the dirt road that are maintained and saw some wildlife along the road. My husband and I really enjoyed ourselves and will be heading out there again in spring.

Guide to Lamoille

Ruby Valley and the surrounding area offer glamping opportunities with varying levels of remoteness and amenities. The Ruby Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for outdoor recreation at elevations ranging from 6,000 to over 10,000 feet. Temperatures fluctuate significantly between seasons, with summer highs reaching 90°F and winter lows dropping below freezing. Access to many camping areas requires travel on maintained dirt roads that remain passable for standard vehicles during dry conditions.

What to do

Wildlife viewing opportunities: South Ruby Campground serves as a gateway to Ruby Marshes, where visitors can observe native species in their natural habitat. "I have a rav4 and it made it out there on the dirt road that are maintained and saw some wildlife along the road," reports Nicole B., highlighting the accessibility of this natural area.

Hot springs exploration: The region contains natural hot springs that provide unique recreational opportunities. Visitors should exercise caution when visiting these geothermal features. "Watch your drive in, new springs are forming and some ground is SOFT! Be safe, have a spotter," advises Jason & Sara S., emphasizing safety considerations.

Unplugged relaxation: Sheep Camp in Ruby Valley offers a chance to disconnect completely from technology and daily stresses. "This is a great place to unplug and get away from it all," notes Ashley F., describing the intentionally off-grid experience at this cabin accommodation.

What campers like

"I found this camp ground on my way to Montana, just wanted to stop for a night and be in the middle of nowhere," shares Nicole B. about her experience at South Ruby Campground, highlighting the appeal of solitude.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: The camping season at South Ruby Campground runs from early May through late October, with weather conditions determining exact opening and closing dates. During summer months, daytime temperatures can make certain activities uncomfortable. "It was hot, very hot during the day," notes Jason & Sara S., indicating that timing activities appropriately is important.

Amenities vary widely: Facilities differ significantly between glamping options in the area. South Ruby Campground offers drinking water, pit toilets, fire pits, and trash disposal, while Sheep Camp provides more limited infrastructure. Pack accordingly based on your specific destination.

Tips for camping with families

Pack for temperature fluctuations: The Ruby Valley area experiences significant temperature changes between day and night. Layered clothing and appropriate sleeping gear ensure comfort throughout your stay at Sheep Camp in Ruby Valley.

Plan evening activities: Some natural features are more comfortable to enjoy after sunset due to daytime heat. "The hot spring is so warm that we couldn't get in it until the sun went down!" explains Jason & Sara S., suggesting that families should schedule certain activities for evening hours.

Bring insect protection: The marshy areas attract insects, particularly during warmer months. "Horses in area, lots of horseflys," warns one South Ruby Campground visitor, indicating that families should pack appropriate insect repellent to maintain comfort during their glamping experience near Lamoille.

Tips from RVers

Size considerations: South Ruby Campground can accommodate larger vehicles despite its remote location. "Big-rig friendly" appears among the listed amenities for South Ruby Campground, though visitors with especially large rigs should research specific site dimensions before arrival.

Sanitation facilities: The campground provides sanitary dump stations for RVs, though hookups are not available. This makes it suitable for self-contained units prepared for boondocking or limited stays.

Water availability: While drinking water is provided at South Ruby Campground, RVers should monitor their usage carefully given the remote location. Filling tanks upon arrival is recommended as the water supply may be limited during peak season or drought conditions.
