Dispersed Camping - Mormon Well Road/Desert Pass

Fall through spring (October to April) is the best time to visit Desert Pass Campground. Summer months are extremely hot and buggy, making camping uncomfortable. The high desert location experiences significant temperature fluctuations, with potentially cold nights even during milder seasons. Winter can be pleasant during the day but prepare for cold nights. Avoid summer camping here unless you're well-equipped for extreme heat and insects.

The area around Desert Pass Campground offers informal hiking opportunities through high desert terrain with Joshua trees and desert flora. While there aren't marked or maintained trails directly at the campground, the surrounding public lands allow exploration. Be prepared for desert hiking with plenty of water, sun protection, and navigation tools. Always inform someone of your hiking plans, as this is a remote area with limited cell service.

Desert Pass Campground is accessed via Mormon Well Road, which is a dirt road requiring some preparation for travel. The road can be rough, particularly from the eastern approach, though it remains passable for most vehicles with decent clearance. The drive is lengthy and takes you through remote desert terrain with beautiful Joshua trees along the way. For the best experience, consider a vehicle with good ground clearance and bring supplies for remote travel including extra water and emergency equipment.

Desert Pass Campground is a primitive dispersed camping area with no developed amenities. There are no restrooms, running water, trash services, or established fire rings. Campers should be prepared to be entirely self-sufficient, bringing all necessary water, packing out all trash, and having a plan for sanitation. The remote location means you'll need to bring everything you need and leave no trace when departing.
