Nelson Creek - Fort Peck Lake

Cattle roam freely through this rustic campground along Fort Peck Lake, where coyotes provide nighttime serenades and vault toilets mark the extent of available facilities. Nelson Creek operates on a first-come, first-served basis with unnumbered sites scattered along dirt roads that can challenge vehicles without four-wheel drive during wet weather.

The four-mile approach follows a washboard gravel road that demands slow speeds to avoid equipment damage. Sites accommodate both tents and RVs, each equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, though campers must bring their own firewood and water. The campground provides direct lake access for swimming and boat launching, making it popular with anglers seeking easy water access.

"No services except vault toilets, picnic tables, fire pits and boat launches," notes Bonnie H., summarizing the bare-bones approach here. Cell service reaches the area, and a covered group shelter offers the only respite from sun or weather, though securing it during summer requires luck. Early September visitors report fewer crowds, with room to spread out among the dozen or so sites typically occupied.

This campground works best for self-sufficient campers comfortable with minimal amenities who prioritize lake access and wildlife encounters over convenience. Those seeking additional options can explore campgrounds near Fort Peck Recreation Area.

Visitors often highlighted the peaceful lakeside location with beautiful sunsets and excellent fishing access. A common theme was the completely rustic experience requiring self-sufficiency, as no services beyond basic facilities are available.

Great views! ROUGH ROAD

Rustic sites, no facilities other than vault toilets.  Offer picnic tables and fire pits but sites are not numbered, only roads.  Great swimming and boating access.

Road is rough!  Full of washboard so unless he want to ruin your equipment, drive slowly!

Breathtaking star gazing

When they say bring what you need they mean it. There are toilets, fire pits and picnic tables...no wood and no water. But the sunset, sunrise and star gazing surrounded by beautiful lakes is worth it! It is a 4-mile drive in on a dirt/gravel road, and mostly dirt road in the campground area, so if you don’t have four-wheel drive the rainy season might get tricky. Good camp sites for tents or R.V.s. Quiet when we were there (early Sept after Labor Day). Plenty of room—only a dozen R.V.s other than our tent and another van. Cows do roam through and coyote sing to you at night. We would stay again!

Boat ramp, picnic tables, fire rings and vault toilets.

First come, first serve. One covered group shelter available but it's hard to get in the summer. Bring everything you'll need as nothing is available here. Great perfect jumping off point for fishermen with boats. Lots of wild life.

SiteSites are not numbered. I've stayed in nearly all of them over the years.
