Best Campgrounds near Jordan, MT

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Camping opportunities near Jordan, Montana center around Fort Peck Lake, with multiple developed campgrounds scattered along its shorelines. The Pines Campground offers picnic tables and fire pits in a rustic setting approximately 20 miles from Jordan, while Hell Creek Recreation Area provides more extensive facilities including a marina, boat ramp and toilets. Most campgrounds in the region accommodate both tent and RV camping, though many sites lack hookups and are best suited for self-sufficient campers seeking basic accommodations in remote settings.

Access to many camping areas requires traveling significant distances on unpaved roads, which can become challenging during wet weather. "Road is rough! Full of washboard so unless he want to ruin your equipment, drive slowly!" noted one camper about Nelson Creek Recreation Area. Most campgrounds feature minimal amenities, with vault toilets, picnic tables and fire rings being standard, while drinking water is available at only some locations. Summer brings ideal camping conditions, though the area can experience intense storms. Cell service is limited throughout the region, and campers should arrive prepared with supplies as services are sparse outside of marinas and recreation areas.

Fort Peck Lake's extensive shoreline provides numerous waterfront camping opportunities with impressive views and recreational access. Campers consistently highlight the scenic beauty, particularly mentioning sunsets across the water as a highlight of their stays. Duck Creek offers free lakeside camping that receives positive reviews for water access, though it can become crowded on weekends. Visitors appreciate the spaciousness between sites at many campgrounds, though privacy is limited due to the open terrain with minimal trees or brush. Wildlife viewing opportunities add to the camping experience, with several reviewers mentioning encounters with local fauna. The remote location creates excellent stargazing conditions, with one visitor describing "clear sky" and "the brightest meteor I have ever seen streak 3/4 way across sky."

    Fort Peck Duck Creek

    Short Stop in Montana

This was the first place we tried in this area for a free spot to camp on the way from Banff/Jasper to Wisconsin. It was decently busy with a few spots left when we arrived at 2:30pm on a Saturday. By the end of the night all the spots were filled with people squeezing their rigs in between “sites”. There are numbered picnic tables and fire rings, but also campers dispersed throughout. You can walk right down to the water and there were plenty of people boating and swimming. Vault toilets were clean, no other amenities. Sunset was beautiful! There were some large groups with multiple RVs together and 5+ cars- it looked like they had been there for a while. I didn’t have any trouble sleeping but my boyfriend said there were generators running all night and some fireworks around 11:30p. Overall felt safe, worked for what we needed, and was free!

    Fort Peck Duck Creek

    Quiet and on the water

Good area for car camping. There are multiple sites (first come first serve) down a gravel road right on the water. There are picnic tables, fire rings, and a pit toilet. Little privacy but nice views of the water. Also depending on the time of year, there were a lot of crickets and small little chiggers biting skin.

    Hell Creek Receation Area

Great if you have a truck

Notd that this campground has changed management and so is now technically the Hell Creek Recreation Area, so if Google maps tells you it's closed don't worry about it! You'll still get to the right place.

Other reviewers were not exaggerating about the road to get there. It was 20 miles of bumpy gravel road, took us 1.5 hours to get over and our motorhome hated every second of it. It was absolutely stunning though, and I have to imagine that if we hadn't been in a motorhome we might have felt very differently.

Only electricity at our site, very limited shared water source, and the showers were coin operated. The staff person there was so nice and welcoming.

So, if you have a vehicle that can handle a difficult road and you're willing to rough it a tiny bit, I would definitely recommend this place. If not, maybe skip it for now.

    Duck Creek

    Free on the water

Great free little campground, very busy on weekends with lots of local traffic. Some spots had shad some didn't, pit toilets. Free Dump and fill outside the Downstream campground.

    Old Dorm RV

    Good location & quiet

Sites aren’t that level, deep gravel. There was a bit of trash strewn around but its quiet and in a good location. I backed in my van and had a view of horses grazing in a field near an old barn…along with a bit of backyard junkyards but that’s the nature of this remote small town. I could walk to everything, the owner was very kind and it was easy to access and had full hookups. Great stay while I visited family.

    Duck Creek

    Lots of elbow room

Lots of space between campsites. But, being central Montana, there are almost no trees or brush. So, there is no privacy.

There is another campsite half a mile west that is set down in a private hollow. No table but really nice if you can do without.

    Good light show... ??
Clear sky and full moon. Suddenly I saw the brightest meteor I have ever seen streak 3/4 way across sky. Brighter than the full moon. WOW! Do they do this light show every night or was this done just for me?

    McGuire Creek

Camp area rather than true campground

Not the best road going in, vault toilets in area, some picnic table, fire pit spots.  Great fishing and swimming.

Nice little area on Fort Peck offering a marina and services, however area is small and very congested. Fills up fast.. Swimming and boating access.

Nelson Creek - Fort Peck Lake

    Great views! ROUGH ROAD

Rustic sites, no facilities other than vault toilets.  Offer picnic tables and fire pits but sites are not numbered, only roads.  Great swimming and boating access.

Road is rough!  Full of washboard so unless he want to ruin your equipment, drive slowly!

Guide to Jordan

Camping spots near Jordan, Montana cluster primarily around Fort Peck Lake, a massive reservoir with 1,520 miles of shoreline. Most campgrounds require traveling 20-30 miles from Jordan on gravel roads that can become challenging in wet weather. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, affecting shoreline camping access and boat launching conditions, particularly during drought years when ramps may require extensions to reach water.

What to do

Fishing and boating access: Fort Peck Duck Creek provides multiple access points for water recreation with minimal facilities. "Duck Creek has nice camping spots, with no hook ups, but does have picnic tables and fire pits. Close access to nice boat ramp as well as easy access areas to the water for swimming, and fishing," notes a camper.

Wildlife viewing: The remote settings around Fort Peck Lake support diverse wildlife. At Duck Creek, campers can explore fossil-rich terrain. "The 2nd and arguable more important reason I loved this spot so much was due to it being surrounded by the Hell Creek Geologic Formation which has some of the highest concentration of vertebrate fossils in the world," reports one visitor.

Stargazing: The minimal light pollution creates excellent stargazing opportunities. A camper at Duck Creek Campground shared: "Good light show... Clear sky and full moon. Suddenly I saw the brightest meteor I have ever seen streak 3/4 way across sky. Brighter than the full moon."

What campers like

Spacious lakefront sites: Many camping areas feature open, grassy peninsulas rather than designated sites. A visitor to Duck Creek Campground observed, "Lots of space between campsites. But, being central Montana, there are almost no trees or brush. So, there is no privacy."

Swimming areas: The lake offers numerous swimming spots with gradual entries. "Great fishing and swimming," notes a camper at McGuire Creek, which features basic amenities including "vault toilets in area, some picnic table, fire pit spots."

Remote solitude: The distance from population centers ensures quiet camping experiences. At Nelson Creek Recreation Area, one camper reported: "If you are looking for a quiet getaway with a camping spot on the lake, this is it. No services except vault toilets, picnic tables, fire pits and boat launches. Fantastic sunsets."

What you should know

Limited facilities: Most camping areas offer only basic amenities. At The Pines, campers find "vault toilets, picnic tables, fire pit, boat ramp, one garbage, group shelter house with playground."

Road conditions: Access roads are predominantly unpaved and can become problematic. "Not the best road going in," notes a McGuire Creek visitor, while another camper at Nelson Creek Recreation Area warns: "It is a 4-mile drive in on a dirt/gravel road, and mostly dirt road in the campground area, so if you don't have four-wheel drive the rainy season might get tricky."

Supply preparation: Services are minimal across the region. A camper at Nelson Creek advises: "When they say bring what you need they mean it. There are toilets, fire pits and picnic tables...no wood and no water." Another notes: "Bring everything you'll need as nothing is available here."

Tips for camping with families

Visit group shelters: Several campgrounds feature covered group areas ideal for family gatherings. The Pines includes a "group shelter house with playground" that provides shade and recreation space for children.

Wildlife education opportunities: The Hell Creek Formation surrounding Duck Creek offers educational value. A camper shares: "While it is illegal to take any vertebrate fossils you can get cool imprints of leaves and other invertebrate animals that lived right alongside the dinosaurs!"

Consider timing: Weekends bring significantly more traffic to popular spots. At Hell Creek Recreation Area, one visitor noted: "Some sites reserved for walk-ups, some sites close to docks, clean, outhouses, swimming," making it suitable for families seeking developed facilities.

Tips from RVers

Length and access restrictions: Many campgrounds cannot accommodate larger RVs. A visitor to Hell Creek Recreation Area warns: "It was 20 miles of bumpy gravel road, took us 1.5 hours to get over and our motorhome hated every second of it... if you have a vehicle that can handle a difficult road and you're willing to rough it a tiny bit, I would definitely recommend this place."

Limited hookups: Most campgrounds offer no utilities. At Old Dorm RV, one of the few sites with hookups, a camper noted: "Sites aren't that level, deep gravel... I backed in my van and had a view of horses grazing in a field near an old barn... it was easy to access and had full hookups."

Water access challenges: Boat ramps can be difficult to navigate during low water periods. A Hell Creek visitor observed: "One issue: it is very hard to get in when it rains if you don't have a 4WD vehicle. Road leading in was absolute mush."
