Butte KOA and Fairmont RV Resort house luxury glamping accommodations within easy reach of Butte's historic downtown. Both locations feature upscale canvas structures with real beds, electricity, and climate control systems that provide comfort regardless of Montana's variable weather conditions. The sites are thoughtfully arranged to maximize privacy while maintaining access to resort amenities including modern bathrooms with hot showers, communal fire pits, and picnic areas. Full-hookup glamping sites include dedicated parking, private decks, and personalized outdoor spaces with Adirondack chairs. "The bathrooms were exceptionally large, clean with great water pressure in the showers. Location was convenient to travel to other nearby cities and easily walkable to the historic uptown," noted one satisfied guest.

Several miles from town, Delmoe Lake offers secluded glamping campsites with stunning water views and mountain backdrops. The glamping sites provide direct lake access, making water activities immediately accessible from your accommodation. On-site activities include paddleboarding on the calm waters, wildlife viewing, and access to nearby OHV trails for adventure enthusiasts. The surrounding Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest offers extensive hiking opportunities and outdoor recreation beyond the glamping sites. A guest remarked, "We camped where we had a view of the lake. The water is nearly always calm and great for paddle boarding!" Sites require reservations during the peak season from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with most accommodations closing for winter by late September.

      Missouri Headwaters State Park Campground

      Tough on tent campers

We camped one night in a tent in site #12. Luckily it was a cool evening because the scent of the vault toilet wafted over our site off and on. Can't imagine being here on a hot humid day in the summer. I'm sure this campground is fine for overnight if you are self contained in an RV.  Good if you don't want to be too far off the Interstate but also don't want the traffic noise.

      Butte KOA Journey

      A No-Frills, Budget Stopover (Plus a Must-See Mining Tour!)

Reviewed by: The Crew at Hitched4fun.com

If you are looking for an overnight stop while rolling through southwestern Montana on Interstate 15 or Interstate 90, the Butte KOA Journey serves its purpose as a functional travel hub. It is far from a luxury resort destination, but if you need a safe, inexpensive, and easily accessible place to park your rig for the night, it gets the job done.

      Campground Grounds & Amenities

It is best to set expectations before pulling in—this is a very basic, older KOA:

      • The Grounds: The roads and driveways are dirt and gravel, which can get muddy after a rain. There is virtually no grass throughout the sites, so expect some dust or dirt around your rig.
      • Facilities & Security: While there is nothing fancy about the park, it felt completely safe and quiet during our overnight stay.  Staff members were very welcoming and friendly.
      • The Value: The nightly rate was very reasonable, which makes up for the lack of upscale amenities. If you just need hookups, level ground, and a spot to catch some sleep without paying premium resort fees, the price matches what you get.

      Location & Highway Access

      • Easy In-and-Out: The standout practical benefit of this park is the convenience. It offers quick, hassle-free on-and-off access from the nearby interstate junction, which makes pulling in after a long driving day and departing the next morning straightforward.
      • The Town Setting: Butte definitely shows signs of an old mining town that has struggled economically since its historic copper mining heydays, but it makes up for that with raw character and rugged Western history.

Must-See Local Stop: The Berkeley Pit Tour

If you stay here, do not leave town without visiting the Berkeley Pit.

      • The Experience: It is an overwhelmingly massive open-pit copper mine that operated for decades and is now filled with heavily mineralized water. Known historically as part of"The Richest Hill on Earth," it offers a fascinating window into America’s industrial past.
      • The Logistics: The viewing stand and tour setup—conveniently run right by the local chamber of commerce/visitors center—is inexpensive and only requires about 30 minutes of your time.
      • Active Mining Nearby: While the Berkeley Pit is retired, active open-pit mining is still happening right next door (projected to continue through 2050!). If you have any interest in mining, geology, or gold and mineral prospecting, this quick detour is well worth your time.

      The Hitched4fun Verdict

The Butte KOA Journey won't win awards for landscaping, but its budget-friendly rate, safe atmosphere, and prime interstate convenience make it a viable 3-star overnight rest stop. Pair it with a half-hour visit to the Berkeley Pit to get an authentic taste of Montana's copper history before hitting the highway again.

      Needs more trees

We are here in October and we are getting snow I love it. Only 3 other campers here. .the dogs just run. Getting about 6 inches of snow. Going to hike some trails tomorrow. We have AT&T and there is cell service but we also have Starlink. No water this time of year and there is only 1 pit toilet...across the campground. It would not be a place I would stay in summer....no trees I'm not a fan of seeing all the campers. Looks like pretty decent gravel sites. We do have electric. The rangers are very nice.

      Deer Lodge A-OK Campground

      It’s AOK!

We were looking for a quick pass through stop for the night, needed to charge up our battery system, but also needed a dog friendly place. When we first pulled in we almost left because it seemed like a tiny little parking lot camping area. The owner Mike came out and told us that there was a little more behind the front of the space. It opened up into a little field with a dog friendly place, with electric hookups along a little stream that had ducks swimming around. Mike just exudes good vibes, the bathrooms were super clean, and it was a really pleasant overnight stop.

      Do not stay here

We camped here as a last resort driving through on 90. There were thunderstorms and we didn’t want to risk muddy conditions of dispersed camping at 11pm. We drove up, and everything was closed. There were payment envelopes, but no fees posted. We took an envelope, but left in the car, intending to pay in the morning. There was a large sign posted on the hut next to the office stating “Don’t bother me until after 10:00am.” The campground is a gravel lot next to the freeway, with high weeds and broken down cars/RV around the perimeter. There is one shower/bathroom house, with a key code. One dumpster. One spigot for water. The spaces have full hookups, but are so close together it looks like a derelict parking lot with a view of the freeway. We slept there, and the next morning at 8:30, the owner drove up in his 4 wheeler, yelling and cursing at us. Our leashed dogs barked at him, as he was verbally attacking us, and he threatened to hit them with his 4 wheeler. Apparently, someone had dropped $10 for payment in an envelope last night and he thought it was us. He continued screaming in my husband’s face along with our three and eight year old sons next to him, stating how little money $10 would buy. I came out and told him that wasn’t our payment, our envelope is in the car, and we couldn’t pay last night as there were no prices listed. The then told us to settle up as we leave, still didn’t give us the code to the bathroom, and then said he was going to have to find the “f$$cking sonan1tch” who gave him only $10. And drove away. No apologies, no nothing. This place is a sh1t hole with a mean tempered owner who nearly gets into violent altercations as a first course of action. Oh, and a site with electricity is $60.

      Philipsburg Bay Campground

      Short walk to lake

Good choice of first come first served spots in lodgepole pine forest. Tree cover not great for solar & starlink. Quite crowded in early August with various floating and boating activities. Sites spread out.

    Guide to Butte

Camping sites near Butte sit at elevations between 5,500-6,200 feet, creating cool nights even during summer months when daytime temperatures average 75°F. The region's granite mountain ranges and continental divide location contribute to variable weather patterns, with afternoon thunderstorms common in July and August. Morning temperatures frequently drop below 45°F even in peak summer camping season.

    What to do

OHV adventures: Access extensive trail networks from Delmoe Lake campground, located 13 miles from Butte. "Lots of rock formations in the area to climb and explore. There's a few trail heads to get to the peaks and get an amazing view of the lake and surrounding valley," notes Nick T. The nearby staging areas make this an ideal base for motorized recreation.

Winter hammock camping: For cold-weather adventurers, Delmoe Lake offers year-round accessibility. "Best out of the 7 campsites we visited on our Montana trip! It's gorgeous and open and has trees you can easily sling up hammocks," reports Mari W., who specifically visited for winter camping. Bring appropriate cold-weather gear rated for sub-freezing conditions.

Historic exploration: Visit Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park for guided cave tours through limestone formations. "Amazing family campsite with amenities, gift shop and stores... The caverns has been modified since I was young making paths and walking through easier with better footing and railing for balance. You will see live animals and bats!!" shares Carla S. Tours run daily from May through September with a moderate 2-mile uphill hike required.

    What campers like

Clean shower facilities: Multiple campers highlight the exceptionally clean restrooms at local campgrounds. At the 2 Bar Lazy H RV Campground, "They made an attempt to make the bathrooms handicap accessible in both the men's and women's. A single shower stall with two grab bars and a flip down bench with a low step shower can be used," notes Lara O., who appreciated the accessibility features.

Lake recreation access: Philipsburg Bay Campground offers excellent water access with spacious sites. "Nice, shaded little spot on the lake. Every site we saw was in the pines. Great for shade, terrible if you rely on solar," explains Luke L. The campground provides direct lake access, making it ideal for paddle sports and fishing.

Historical significance: History buffs appreciate Missouri Headwaters State Park where three rivers converge to form the Missouri. "Experience Camping near where Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and the Corps of Discovery camped at the headwaters of the Missouri river in 1805," notes Dexter I. The park features interpretive displays about the Corps of Discovery and dugout canoe exhibits.

    What you should know

Weather preparedness: Mountain climate means variable conditions throughout the camping season. "Cold, nice weather for hiking," reports Cella P. about Butte KOA's elevation. Weather can change rapidly, with nighttime temperatures dropping significantly even in summer months.

Tent site limitations: Many RV parks in the area offer limited tent-only sections. At Fairmont RV Resort, "Site was grassy. No fires allowed for obvious reasons. We were the only tent guests. Most people looked like they were long term RV'rs," notes Lori R. Call ahead to confirm tent site availability before arrival.
