Monture Creek

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Monture Creek sits within a state fishing access site along Highway 200 near Ovando, where five drive-in campsites are divided between two spots close to the road and three set further back among large pines. The layout matters. Sites 1, 2, and 3 sit far enough from the highway that the trees absorb most of the road noise, while the two roadside sites get the full sound of passing traffic, which reviewers describe as a notable drawback when the back sites are already taken.

Monture Creek runs roughly 100 feet from the campsites, and fishing access is the main draw here. The creek holds trout, and anglers can reach the water without much of a walk. Views through the tree canopy are limited, but the creek itself gives the area a distinct character. Each site has a picnic table and metal fire ring. One vault toilet serves the entire area, and there is no potable water on site, so campers need to arrive prepared. This is a pack-in, pack-out campground.

Nightly rates vary depending on whether campers hold a Montana fishing license and state residency status. Nearby alternatives include Upsata Lake to the north and Russell Gates Memorial to the west, both also operated as fishing access sites. Monture Creek works best as an overnight stop for anglers or travelers passing through on Highway 200 who can secure one of the back sites.

No frills rest spot

This spot has 5 sites to camp at . 2 sit literally feet off the road & 3 sit further back . The sites are very small & there is no privacy. On this day , someone was using 2 of the better sites at once to accommodate their oversized travel trailer. Not cool. We have a travel trailer too but our only other option was a site right off the road . Since we were just passing thru, we desperately needed to rest for the night so we camped in one of the wide open spots right off the road. Kind of a bummer , especially for 18 dollars. Small patch of dead grass with a picnic table & fire ring with a lot of road noise. On the plus side- there is a lovely creek that runs along the area . Maybe it’s a better experience if you can snag one of the more set back spots in the trees & if you fish .

Quiet camp with good fishing

Monture Creek Fishing Access site is a nice small campground/fishing access site with five campsites. Two just off of Hwy 200 and three more back away from the highway. Monture Creek has good trout fishing with the creek being only about 100 feet from the campsites. One vault toilet serves the fishing access and camping area. Each campsite has a picnic table and metal fire ring. Sites 1, 2 and 3 sit far enough back that the large pine trees do a pretty good job of blocking most of the highway noise. Like all the fishing access sites with camping in the state, the nightly rate is based on if you have a fishing license and are a Montana resident or not. This is a trash-in, trash-out site and no water is available so come prepared.

Fishing & Quiet

There's not really any views here due to the trees, but there's amenities and fishing nearby! There's fire pits, and there was only one other party of people there when we went in August, so it was perfectly quiet for us. I remember there being some flies, but nothing too bad.
