Fishing and hiking give campers two strong reasons to make the drive out to Wood Lake, a Forest Service campground in Lewis & Clark National Forest near the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. The lake sits across the road from the campsites and is small enough to walk around on a dirt trail, making it accessible on foot within minutes of setting up camp. Anglers have reported consistent cutthroat trout catches using dry fly and lures, and the lake's calm surface has also drawn interest from paddlers, though there are no rentals on site.
The 12 campsites are spread through a stand of mature fir and lodgepole pine, with most sites in shade and a few in open sun. Sites are spacious, each equipped with a metal fire ring and a concrete picnic table. A hand pump provides drinking water, and two vault toilets serve the campground. A trailhead inside the campground connects to routes that extend well beyond the lake loop.
Getting here requires roughly 20 miles of dirt road. RVs up to 30 feet can access the campground, though the unpaved approach warrants attention after wet weather. The nightly fee is $10. Nearby alternatives worth considering include Double Falls Campground about 3.6 miles southeast and Van Deriet Campground roughly 4.7 miles northwest. Nic F. sums up the draw simply: "Always like going here very peaceful nice cut throat here." If the combination of lake access, forest sites, and trail access fits your itinerary, Wood Lake is worth the dirt road miles.
