Lewis & Clark National Forest runs a well-maintained operation at Many Pines Campground, set along U.S. 89 near Neihart in the Little Belt Mountains. The campground's 24 first-come, first-served sites sit among dense conifers that do a reasonable job of muffling highway noise, though campers in spots closer to the road will notice traffic sounds during the day. No reservations are accepted, and the fee is $15 per night. Cell service is essentially nonexistent here.
One of the more distinctive layout features is the two-tier site design: a number of campsites are split across levels, with wooden stairs and railings connecting the upper and lower areas where the tent pad and fire ring sit. Every site has a picnic table and fire ring, and a few include a BBQ grill or second table. "Bathrooms are clean, and campsites are clearly marked with seclusion from other guests," notes Jonathan L.. Vault toilets and a hand-pump water source are on site. A creek runs nearby. Pack-in, pack-out rules apply for trash.
RVs up to 22 feet fit reliably, though one reviewer with a 28-foot fifth wheel reported fitting without issue. A campground host is sometimes on site. Showdown Ski Area sits just above the campground, which gives the surrounding terrain some elevation and tree cover. For campers who want a different setup in the same corridor, Kings Hill Campground is located roughly four miles to the south, and Aspen Campground provides another option to the northwest.
Description
5900-foot elevation. 22 campsites in the canyon carved by Belt Creek in the Little Belt Moutains. Fishing for brook trout in the creek. The Belt Creek Information Center is about 8 miles north of the campground, and trails to the east of the visitor center connect to an extensive trail system. Bears may frequent the area; keep all food out of sight in approved containers and remove all food from area after eating. Mandatory food storage is required.
