These destinations feature luxury outdoor stays with amenities far beyond standard camping. Whippoorwill Lake offers fully-equipped glamping accommodations with electricity, showers, and toilet facilities alongside a small lake with sandy beaches. Perryville RV Resort provides premium glamping experiences complete with swimming pool, giant trampoline, playground facilities, and shaded sites nestled among large trees. The campgrounds maintain full bathroom facilities with showers, picnic tables at each site, and year-round availability for seasonal getaways. According to a camper, "Such a clean campground! There are a ton of big trees and it is really shady. We love our time here."

Hiking trails connect directly to several of these glamping properties, with Perryville offering a trail around their lake and Shawnee Forest Campground providing access to scenic forest paths. The region supports year-round outdoor activities with Giant City State Park nearby featuring distinctive sandstone formations, panoramic views, and multiple easy-to-moderate hiking options. Perryville's proximity to Interstate 55 makes it easily accessible for weekend getaways, though some reviewers mention highway noise as a minor drawback to this otherwise amenity-rich glamping destination with full water and electrical hookups.

      Marion/Shawnee National Forest KOA Holiday

      Different than Most KOA Holidays

We were heading back to our home base and decided to check out this new KOA Holiday and dump our tanks before heading home. The campground (CG) was approximately 10 miles and 20 minutes off I-57 on southern Illinois backcountry roads. Along the way, we encountered a suspiciously low power line that our 13.5'-high rig cleared. Small KOA signs guided us all the way in. We've stayed at many KOAs and particularly enjoyed KOA Holidays for their service and amenities, but this CG was not what we expected. We arrived at a large gravel parking area and found a check-in room at the end of a warehouse, with envelopes on a bulletin board and a phone number to request an escort. Since the RV sites were down a steep hill, we checked our assigned Creek Side site 26 before moving our rig. Sites 23–26 sat in a bowl at the bottom of the CG, with little room to maneuver our 41' fifth wheel and F450. The escort number went to voicemail, but we reached the manager using the CG brochure number. He agreed our rig wouldn't fit and moved us to back-in site 18 on the hill. All RV sites were back-ins. Creek Side sites appeared better suited for smaller RVs, although larger rigs might fit sites 23 and 24. We later discovered the main KOA office near the marina, which handled cabin check-ins, food, and boat rentals. Sites 1–19 were former pull-through motorcoach sites converted to back-ins, with utilities on the opposite side to accommodate other RVs. Our site 18 was exceptionally wide but close to neighboring sites. We positioned our rig toward the right side of the gravel pad (facing the site) to maintain reasonable access to hookups. The electrical pedestal was at the far back, requiring approximately 35' of power cord to accommodate our toy hauler's rear deck. The wide pad provided plenty of parking for a tow vehicle or boat. However, the CG brochure listed a $75 fee for parking boats or trailers at sites, and a marina sign listed a $50 launch fee. We couldn't determine how these fees applied. Water pressure was excellent, so use a regulator. CG Wi-Fi delivered 20.9 Mbps, Verizon had two bars, and T-Mobile had three. Our T-Mobile Home Internet delivered 358 Mbps, allowing us to stream golf and football. With no trees around the RV sites, satellite reception shouldn't be a problem. Some sites had limited lake views, but don't expect panoramic views or direct lake access. The CG had undergone considerable improvements, including attractive cabins, several right on the lake. KOA cabins were mixed with privately owned cabins, while lake access was concentrated near the small marina and swimming area. We expected more direct lake access and walking trails, but neither was available from the RV sites. A standard fenced KOA dog park was available, but longer walks with our pup were limited to a short path around the fishing pond, gravel areas, and CG roads. Considerable work and investment had gone into this CG, but our experience didn't entice us to return.

      Giant City State Park Campground

      Good staff & clean facility.

I stayed at a walk-to tent site for which the price was $8 per night. Pretty solid Verizon cell signal. Clean showers and well kept. The place did sound pretty loud as far as older partiers, though around 9pm, it was near silent. I'd definitely stay here again.

      Giant City State Park Campground

      Quiet Retreat

Campground was quiet and peaceful when I was there. Numerous trails within the park and I had them to myself while out hiking.

      Fall fabulous

The trees changes are amazing in the fall. Lots of great camping spots to select from. Good for any kind of camping and has cabins, store, and restaurant. Great bike trails and plenty of water play in the river.

      Hawn State Park Campground

      Favorite Campground

This is my favorite campground in Missouri. It has the best atmosphere with grand hiking, both day hikes and back country camping. I have stayed all over in this campground. The spring that runs through it is great in the heat of the summer and the huge pine trees provide excellent shade. There is not much cell service down in the valley, but calls will go out if you drive up the hill. The sites book up quickly so make sure to have a reservation before showing up.

      Shawnee Forest Campground

      Adequate for overnight

Two bathouses with two private bathrooms each. More geared for self-contained RVs. Toilet didn't flush.. Friendly host. All sites are pull through and very nice. 1/4 mile from interstate.

      Boomland RV Park & Campground

      Great for an Overnighter

Boomland RV Park& Campground was super easy to find off I-57 near the I-55 junction. After passing the Boomland complex, the large campground sign clearly marks the right turn into the park. The campground operates first come, first served, so campers choose a site in either the 50/30-amp or 30-amp pull-through sections, all with full hookups, with power options clearly marked on numbered site posts. We drove the small campground loop to find a longer pull-through so we would not have to disconnect our 40-foot fifth wheel and F-450 for an overnight stay, and settled on site 20 with 50/30-amp service. The 30-amp section in the center of the campground appeared to have the longest sites overall. After parking and setting up, registration was handled inside the building by completing an envelope with name, vehicle license number, and payment, then dropping the envelope in the box. All utilities functioned properly, though the campground does not offer Wi-Fi. Cell service was solid with three bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. We walked to the Boomland complex and noticed 24-hour diesel pumps that accept major credit and trucker cards, which could be convenient even though we did not fuel there. The Boomland complex was worth exploring, with a restaurant, gift shop, packaged foods, fireworks, souvenirs, and snacks, and during our November visit the seasonal Christmas shop was especially impressive. Boomland also offers a 10% military discount on non-food items. The campground does not have a designated pet area, but a large park-like space across the street provided plenty of room for off-leash exercise. Overall, this campground made a solid and convenient overnight stop.

Crab Orchard Lake Crab Orchard NWR

      Beautiful spot but ...$$

Don't get fooled! We have the America the beautiful pass and she charged us $35 because she said it was up to her discretion to charge full price on the weekends. What a joke!

    Guide to Jackson

The Shawnee National Forest region surrounding Jackson, Missouri sits at elevations ranging from 400 to 700 feet above sea level, with rolling hills giving way to sandstone formations and hardwood forests. Summer temperatures average 85-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall bring milder conditions ideal for outdoor recreation. Winter camping remains available at several sites with temperatures rarely dropping below 20°F for extended periods.

    What to do

Hiking diverse terrain: Giant City State Park Campground features multiple trail difficulty options suitable for various skill levels. "The Trillium Trail is a little more rugged for those who prefer less crowded, slightly tougher trails," notes Shana D., while another visitor mentions "Lots of amazing, beautiful hikes in this park, especially if you're into bluffs and large boulders."

Horseback riding: The equestrian-friendly campsites at Giant City provide specialized accommodations for those traveling with horses. "There are currently 25 equestrian camp sites in this park in a different area than the normal RV and Tent campground," explains Michael M. "There are fantastic hiking trails and equestrian trails here and you would think you are in the mountains."

Fishing opportunities: Crab Orchard Lake provides excellent angling options with multiple species available. "Fishing was good (especially catfish and crappie)," reports Tracie E. The lake features both shallow coves and deeper sections accessible from numerous lakeside camping spots.

Climbing for experienced adventurers: Several locations offer climbing opportunities for those with proper equipment. Josh M. notes, "For climbers, there is a ton of nearby trad and sport climbing. The main wall stays wet for a while so if it has recently rained you may need to find somewhere else."

    What campers like

Shaded sites: Perryville RV Resort By Rjourney gets high marks for its tree cover. "Very well kept and clean campground. Great big trees, very shaded," writes one reviewer. Another adds, "Spots are intermingled in the trees and it is spectacular in the morning."

Clean facilities: Multiple campgrounds maintain high cleanliness standards. "The restrooms were clean and they also have some vault toilets in the park for convenience," notes Cody S. about Hawn State Park Campground, while another camper reports, "Bathrooms and shower house were all clean!"

Winter camping options: Unlike some regions, several campgrounds remain accessible year-round. "We stayed here during the winter while visiting my brother who was in college nearby," writes Josh M. "Even in the winter the sites were quite clear and clean and it provided great access to nearby trails and hiking."

Reasonable prices: Camping remains affordable at most locations. "Cheap campground that is clean and quiet. The back in site we had overlooked the lake. For the price, you can't beat the view," notes TJ G. about Crab Orchard Lake.

    What you should know

Limited privacy at some sites: Not all campgrounds provide secluded experiences. "This is your run of the mill campground. Lots of RVs, close sites, not much privacy," reports Shelagh R. about Giant City. Another camper notes, "Site 46 was a walk-in site, but did not offer the privacy that is typical for walk-in sites."

Highway noise considerations: Proximity to major roads affects some campgrounds. "It is right off from the interstate, so there is some noise," warns one Perryville visitor, while another mentions, "The highway is also extremely close and can be heard at all times."

First-come, first-served policies: Sam A. Baker State Park Campground and some others don't guarantee availability without reservations. "The biggest thing about this campground is first come first serve..and one loop is closed for renovations," explains one visitor. "Most you can spend here is 14 days, which lots of locals do."

Backcountry camping options: For those seeking more remote glamping near Jackson, Missouri, several parks offer primitive sites. "We stayed in the primitive camp site, while there were others there, everyone was dispersed far enough that it felt private," writes Sunshine Z.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly water features: Whippoorwill Lake Campground Resort offers specific amenities for younger visitors. "Small lake. Has tent camping or cabins. All roads are gravel. Lake has sandy beaches. Small playset in the water for kids," notes Brasley C.

Playground alternatives: Some campgrounds offer unique recreational equipment. Jamey W. describes Perryville: "The pool is better than most hotels and the giant trampoline looked like it would be my daughter's favorite thing if she were with us."

Family-oriented sections: Certain glamping facilities near Jackson specifically designate family areas separate from more active sections. "We stayed in the family camping area," mentions one visitor about campsite pricing at Huzzah Valley, which ranges "from $12.79 (for the family camping area) to $16.00 (for the loud area with no quiet hours, nicknamed the Zoo)."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Many parks provide chances to observe native species. "Great for kids. Park is well maintained," reports Kevin B. about Sam A. Baker State Park, adding it has a "Beautiful view" with opportunities to see regional wildlife.

    Tips from RVers

Limited big rig access: Many sites cannot accommodate larger RVs. "This is a smallish state park in the eastern part of Missouri," notes Chad K. about Hawn State Park. "The campground is small but well maintained."

Hookup variations: Water and electric availability differs significantly between campgrounds. "Shady and quiet. This is a great state park campground. They have electric sites, and water is available but you need to fill your tank before setting up camp. Sites are flat and most are pull through," advises Joel R.

Site leveling challenges: Shawnee Forest Campground and others require equipment adjustments. "The sites are spacious and have picnic tables and fire rings. Full hookups is a plus. The sites are loose gravel and not level front to back, so you need to unhook," explains Greg S.

Dump station locations: Not all campgrounds offer on-site dumping. "Hawn is a smaller state park with a good mix of electric and non-electric sites," reports Cody S., but RVers should note dump station availability varies seasonally at many locations.
