Built by Boy Scouts and largely forgotten since, Root River Canoe Campsite sits along a stretch of the Root River where the water has shifted course over the decades, leaving the bank further from camp than it once was. Access comes by canoe, kayak, or on foot via a fork off the nearby bike trail. It is free to stay, managed by the Minnesota DNR, and sees little overnight use. The site has a pit toilet, picnic tables, and a fire ring. Paddlers planning a multi-day float can pair it with Money Creek & Vinegar Ridge — R.J.D. Memorial Hardwood State Forest, roughly 1.3 miles northwest. Bring everything you need; there are no water sources or hookups on site.
