    Sinclair Lewis City Campground

    Small town

My extended family has gatherings here a couple times a year as it is close to everybody and a great location! The campground is open for the season from May 1st to October 1st each year, weather permitting.

Reasons we like this campground: lakefront sites are available, the town is small so pretty quiet but there are gas stations, restaurants, and stores (including Walmart), it is close to home for everybody so this tends to be the first trip of the year to get water in everything and make sure there are no fun surprises after wintering the campers for 5 to 6 months, has bathrooms, there is a walking trail close to the campground that goes around part of the lake.

Additional details and amenities: 80 sites, 52 sites with full hookup which include water, sewer and electricity and 24 sites with water and electricity only and 4 primitive sites. All campsites contain a fire pit. Three sets of restrooms are contained within the campground with showers. Other amenities include: picnic tables, storm shelter, dump station, fish cleaning house, kayak rental, lake access with boat ramp and docks. Public beach, splash pad, bike trail, and playground adjacent.

    Lake Carlos State Park Campground

    Beautiful and quiet

End of October, Stopped for just one night, probably about a 20ish minute drive from 94. Was able to purchase firewood after closing, and the campsite were easy to find after (7$)entry to the park. Campsites are reserved through an online system. We found the top campsite completely empty and plenty of sites had good tree coverage for privacy/ way no protection. Nice level sites with soft ground. Each site had a fire ring and picnic table. The only bathroom in walking distance to the upper campsites was a vault toilet located amongst the cabins. Seems like a great place to stay any season.

    Maplewood State Park Campground

Loved our short time here in a camper cabin

We stayed at Maplewood State Park mid-July. We actually stayed in one of the 3 camper cabins and loved it! They have electricity, heat, ceiling fans and a private dock on Beers Lake. There is a vault toilet & water spicket nearby. Each cabin has its own fire pit and picnic table area. It felt very private although the cabins are rather near to each other. We checked out the campgrounds and they had spacious sites, some more private than others. It had a family friendly feel and was obviously a favorite spot for fisherman and water recreation enthusiasts. I wish we could have spent more time in the 9200 acre park. There is a swimming beach & picnic area that allows you to have campfires, as well as a nice shower house. The ranger was helpful regarding my questions about the lake and potentially renting a cabin for ice fishing this winter. At sunset, sitting by the lake, it was beautiful- nothing but songbirds and the call of loons to listen to.

    Golden Eagle Campground

    Great for families

On the Gunflint Trail  off the beaten path! Get away from it all...really. No cell to bother you here! On Flour Lake with great service from the staff. Sights are close and tight but have nice tree and foliage growth between sites. No full hook up...but dump station on site. Fishing dock and boat rental on site with reasonable prices. In the Superior National  Forest..lots of hiking trails. Lakes all around to explore and the Gunflint  historical society up the road. Drive trail to end for some great views and the north south continental divide.  We were here for 6 days and loved it. Bath house geta a just ok from me...not the best or worse I've seen. Friendly folks everywhere.

    Outdoors Inn Campground

    Great location next to Chippewa

    Recommended!

We had a full hookups with 50 amp service. Our site was next to US-12 and had no noise issues. The Chippewa river flows next to the camp and the adjoining river bank is woodlands. We had no insect issues. There is a super dog park and grocery just east on US-12. Found great coffee and scones in Benson at Go Set Ready Coffee.

Our site had a great camp fire pit made from a half sphere about 40 inches in diameter. Looked like the bottom of a buoy or end of a 250 lbs propane tank. The proprietor is an arborist and sold us a large bundle of hard wood that made great smores.

We picked Benson because of its close location to Glacial Lake state park and the Glacial Ridge Trail. Just take MN-29 north.  The topology change in terrain from the farm lands around Benson to the rolling hills and lakes north on MN-29 is great. Continue on MN-29 to Starbuck for a sizable lake. Take some time and explore the back roads on and around the Glacial Ridge Trail. There are many hills, forests and lakes you can explore east up to New London.

We had an encounter with a pair of swans on the side of the road next to a lake. These are large beautiful birds! We stopped in the car, kept our distance, watched from inside of the car and enjoyed them before the slipped back into the lake.

    Camp S'more Campground

    Family friendly local campground

This is a quiet and fairly small but impeccably maintained campground located near the town of Long Prairie. It would be a nice family friendly destination for an easy lical get away. There are weekly, monthly and seasonal site rentals with RV hookups, plus they do have a fully furnished on-site RV available to rent for those who dont have their own. The owners clearly take pride in maintaining the campground and in building a friendly camp community for families

Guide to Garfield

RV sites near Garfield, Minnesota provide access to the lakes region of central Minnesota where elevations range from 1,300-1,400 feet. The area experiences four distinct seasons with warm summers reaching into the 80s and cold winters often dropping below freezing. Most campgrounds in this region operate from May through October with limited year-round options available for winter camping.

What to do

Water recreation access: The Homestead at Ottertail RV Park and Resort offers proximity to Otter Tail Lake for fishing and boating. "We absolutely love this campground! We've camped there every year since 2019! Great owners, great amenities, close to many lakes…not much else you could ask for!" notes Sheila K.

Shooting sports: Alexandria Shooting Park and RV Campground combines camping with access to shooting facilities. "We stayed for a few nights during the State High School Trap Shoot. Crowds were expected and it was a busy area. Surprisingly quiet in the evening given how many people were there," reports Clarence C.

Trail activities: Andes RV Park maintains extensive trail systems used for various seasonal activities. "It has outstanding trails that they use in the winter time for cross-country skiing with tons of outdoor activities," explains Ryan L. The park also offers golf cart rentals for exploring these trails during summer months.

What campers like

Clean, modern facilities: Campers consistently praise the bathroom and shower facilities at several parks. "Brand-new, spacious bathrooms and showers that were really nice and clean!" reports a visitor at Andes RV Park. The park also features laundry facilities and well-maintained common areas.

Spacious sites: Hardy's Lake in the Woods RV Resort receives high marks for its site layout. "The sites are very large and it is nicely wooded. They have a few areas where the sites are more in the open but not many," explains Josh H. The resort combines wooded privacy with open areas.

Recreational amenities: Multiple campgrounds offer on-site recreation options. At The Homestead at Ottertail RV Park, Tori K. notes, "PARK AMENITIES: bathrooms, showers, pool with spacious deck, fish cleaning shack, room to roam, playground, laundry facilities, firewood and ice available, basketball court, volleyball."

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most RV parks in the Garfield area have limited operating seasons. Plan accordingly for shoulder season visits when services may be limited.

Insect preparation: Bugs can be significant during summer months. "If coming in summer make sure to bring plenty of bug spray!!!" warns a camper at Andes RV Park. Mosquitoes are particularly active from June through August, especially near lake areas.

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds have unique noise factors. At Alexandria Shooting Park, Roger B. advises: "It is an active gun range so if shooting bothers you, may not be your place." Similarly, Lakes Area Motel and RV Park campers note: "Crop dusters zoom off from nearby airport."

Tips for camping with families

Pool availability: Swimming pools provide recreation when lake temperatures are cool. Hardy's Lake in the Woods RV Park features "a very large" pool, though seasonal opening times vary. Similarly, The Homestead at Ottertail offers a "pool with spacious deck" that gives families water recreation options during warmer months.
