Bent Trout Lake Campground

Sitting on a privately owned lake in Carlton County, Bent Trout Lake Campground operates as a family-run facility outside Barnum, Minnesota, open from mid-May through October 1. Drive-in access keeps things straightforward, and the campground accommodates both RVs with full hookups (electric, water, and sewer) and tent campers, with nightly rates running $10 to $30. A dump station at the exit means RV campers can leave without an extra stop in town.

The lake is the central draw. Because it's privately owned, fishing and swimming access is reserved for registered guests, which reviewers consistently flag as a notable perk. Boat and water toy rentals are available on-site, and the campground has a small store stocked with basic supplies. A playground, rec room with a pool table, and organized activities give families with kids multiple reasons to stay put. Reviewers note the campground draws a mix of seasonal residents and visiting families, so expect a communal atmosphere rather than a secluded one.

Facilities are well-maintained across the board. Showers and bathrooms get repeated mentions for cleanliness, even if the fixtures are dated. Jesse E. describes the site as "very well maintained," and notes the dump station as "such a big perk." Nearby alternatives include Hanging Horn Lakeside Resort and Carlton County Bear Lake Campground for campers comparing options in the area. Reservations are available and worth making ahead of the Fourth of July week, when the campground hosts its own fireworks display.

Visitors repeatedly highlighted the immaculate grounds, friendly family-run hospitality, and excellent lakefront amenities. The private lake offers great fishing and swimming, while families appreciate the playground and organized activities.

Great for large groups

This is a family run business and they take a lot of pride in keeping the grounds clean and safe. Lots of families come here and that is how I was introduced to it. The fishing is great and the community feel is awesome and the way camping should be done!

So much fun!

We came up here with a bunch of friends and all of our kids as a group. We had three campers and a tent and they accommodated us with no issues.

This is a relaxed and mellow place and I'm sure the seasonal campers appreciate visitors being the same. It certainly felt like a family, while we checked in we were offered a piece of cake because someone there had a birthday and why wouldn't you have cake?? Awesome!

The site we shared was clean and very well maintained. The lake is privately owned so the wonderful fishing is only open to guests and there is very good fishing there.

We showed up with a ton of kids from ages 1 to 15 and they played, and swam and rented boats and hung out in the gift shop and I'm sure they pestered the wonderful people and they took it like champs. They were amazing hosts in every sense of the word.

The showers and bathrooms weren't the most modern but they were very well maintained and very clean and so much better than others I've used.

There is also a dump station as you exit so we didn't have to make another stop when we left. This is such a big perk!

We will be coming back here.

A real gem.

Very well maintained property, beautiful location right on the lake. Clean showers and bathrooms, nice little store, playground for the kids, clean swimming beach, this place has it all! The family that runs the place is awesome and very helpful, we love it and will definitely be back!

We enjoy this place

Bent Trout Lake Campground is a beauty. They have tent camping with hookups at times. There is a great, well-maintained lake which in turn makes the beach just as nice as the lake itself. Pristine waters with great piece of property surrounding it. Friendly staff and win-win for family’s and others alike.

Family Friendly With Lots to Do

Absolutely love this campground! They have RV sites and tent sites a private lake with swimming area and fishing/boat/water toy area. There's a little store with all your basic supplies and where you can rent different boats and water things and a rec area with pool table and games. Lots of campground activities to bring everyone together. Their own private firework display the week of the 4th.
