Situated just outside Mears on Michigan's western shoreline, Dunes Harbor Family Camp opened in 2015 and has built a consistent reputation around one thing campers mention repeatedly: cleanliness. The grounds, bathrooms, and camp store all receive frequent attention from staff, and daily garbage pickup from individual sites is a detail that catches first-time visitors off guard. The campground runs from May 15 through October 15, with peak-season activities running on a fuller schedule than shoulder months.
Site character varies considerably depending on where you land. The east side of the campground borders a river and has mature trees providing shade, while the west side remains largely open to the sun with younger saplings planted when the campground was built. Sites are grassy with gravel drives and cement pads for picnic tables. They run large by private campground standards, though some reviewers note the spacing between neighbors is closer than they would prefer. You cannot reserve a specific site, but you can request one, and regulars recommend sites 50, 39, 76, and 32 for RVs, and 138, 142, and 152 for tents.
The on-site lake gives anglers and kayakers a place to spend time without leaving the property, and as Stu E. notes, it's "probably the closest campground to the entrance to Silver Lake sand dunes." ATV access from the campground, waterfront sites for jet skis, a waterpark-style pool with a slide, an ice cream shop, a playground, and a Gaga ball pit round out the activity options. A short hiking trail exists on the property, though reviewers flag it as under a mile.
The campground operates alcohol-free as part of a Christian camp affiliation. RVs up to 80 feet can access full hookups including electric, water, and sewer, and a dump station is on site. Demand runs high enough that a waitlist is common during summer weekends, so booking well in advance gives the best chance at availability. For those exploring the broader region, Silver City II Campground is another option roughly a mile to the southeast.
