Baraga State Forest Area holds this small, free dispersed campground on the shores of a spring-fed lake outside campgrounds near Toivola, managed by the MIDNR Forest Resources Division. The site count is modest, roughly six cleared spots, a few of which sit directly at the water's edge and tend to work best for tent campers, though a couple of the more level lakeside positions can accommodate small travel trailers or vans.
The unpaved road in is a consistent theme across reviews. Potholes are large enough that slow driving is not optional, and the terrain gets rockier toward the wooded interior sites. Mosquitoes are heavy in the trees but noticeably lighter out by the lake, which also gives open sightlines toward the water where loons and eagles have been spotted. "Road to the lake isn't paved and there are huge potholes so go slow," notes Laura M., who also confirmed solid Verizon and AT&T cell reception on her visit.
Crowd patterns vary by season. During summer weekends, all sites may be occupied, with some appearing to host long-term campers. Day visitors also drive in regularly to swim and fish. Off-season visits offer more solitude, though the open, cleared layout means privacy is limited regardless of when you arrive. A short trail runs near the water. Campers exploring the broader area can also find sites near Baraga State Forest Area if this spot is full. Bring bug protection and plan for a rough but manageable drive in.
