River access draws anglers and paddlers to Sturgeon River Campground, where the wide waterway flows just steps from most of the nine wooded sites. Located six miles down a winding dirt road from M-28 in Ottawa National Forest, this first-come, first-serve campground operates as a free, rustic retreat for campers comfortable with basic amenities.
The campground spreads sites well apart through the forest, with rocks strategically placed to prevent vehicles from driving through tent-only areas. Two sites accommodate RVs and offer the closest river views, while the remaining spots require short walks to the water's edge. Each site includes a fire ring, picnic table, and lantern hook. Dayton notes "River is very close, about a stones throw away. You can hear it at night."
Vault toilets serve the campground, but campers must bring their own water or filter river water for drinking. The dirt access road contains potholes that require careful navigation, though most vehicles can make the journey. Cell service remains sporadic with basic T-Mobile coverage. Pack-out policies apply for all trash.
The nearby Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness offers additional hiking opportunities for campers exploring this corner of the Upper Peninsula.
