Potomac Forks Hiker Biker Overnight Campsite — Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park

Hike-in access limits this National Park Service site to just two tent spots, with a third possible only if campers accept sleeping on sloped ground. The campsite sits within the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park along the historic towpath, requiring visitors to carry their gear to reach the overnight area. Basic amenities include drinking water and toilets, while cell service remains available for those needing connectivity.

One reviewer notes the adjacent lockhouse as a potential setup option, though permission for this use remains unclear. The site's minimal capacity means advance planning is essential, particularly during peak hiking seasons. For campers seeking additional options in the area, campgrounds around Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park provide alternatives with different access requirements and capacities.

Small

This HBO site literally only has two spots to set up your tent. Likely 3 tent max unless you want to sleep on a slope. You can set up on the lockhouse but I don't know if its OK or not

What amenities and facilities are available at Potomac Forks Campsite?

Potomac Forks Campsite is a minimalist hiker-biker overnight site with very limited facilities. The campsite offers just two designated tent spots with space for a maximum of three tents, unless you're willing to set up on a slope. There's a nearby lockhouse where some campers set up, though official permission for this practice is unclear. As with most C&O Canal hiker-biker sites, amenities are basic and designed for self-sufficient travelers. Bring all necessary camping supplies, food, and water or water treatment methods.

Do I need reservations for Potomac Forks Campsite or is it first-come, first-served?

Potomac Forks Campsite operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system. Given its limited capacity of only two proper tent sites (three tents maximum), arriving early is highly recommended, especially during weekends and peak season. The site's small size means it can fill up quickly with just a few campers. If this site is full, be prepared with a backup plan to continue to another hiker-biker campsite along the C&O Canal towpath.

What recreational activities are available at or near Potomac Forks Campsite?

Recreational activities at and near Potomac Forks Campsite center around the natural setting of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. The primary activities include hiking and biking along the historic C&O Canal towpath, which offers scenic views and connects to numerous historical sites. Bird watching and wildlife observation are popular given the riverside location. The nearby Potomac River provides opportunities for fishing, though you'll need appropriate licenses. Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the natural scenery where the river forks. The site's positioning makes it ideal for through-hikers and bikers exploring the larger C&O Canal trail system.

Where is Potomac Forks Campsite located and how do I get there?

Potomac Forks Hiker Biker Overnight Campsite is located along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. The campsite is positioned at a junction where the Potomac River forks, making it a scenic spot for overnight stays. For exact directions, check the National Park Service website or contact the C&O Canal park office.
