Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Ramblin' Pines

      Weak WiFi

For $90 per night the WiFi should work better. Didn’t connect at all. Had to use the antenna pointed East to get local Baltimore news.

      Cherry Hill Park

      My All Time Favorite…so far

This park is top notch. The grounds are immaculate. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have a lovely gift shop. We were in the 400 sites and it was nice and shady. Though you are close to highways I don’t recall hearing and noise. I love that they have shuttles to DC., walking trails and a large dog park. This is my all time favorite park so far and I need to go back.

      Joint Base Andrews Military FamCamp

Could be a great campground but......

There are some good things about this Famcamp. It's like a diamond in the rough. If the military would spend some time and money on it, it could be a great campground. One of the greatest points about this campground is its location. You are so close to downtown D.C.! Every RV site (as far as I saw) was a level concrete pad. All sites, except for tent sites, have full electricity. Most sites have sewer and water. Sites 12-18 should be mainly used for the smaller travel trailers. I had an interesting time getting my 35' 5th wheel into the site. Even though I got my RV into the site, I don't have much room for my truck. My site has a picnic table, fire pit, and a grill. Everything is rusted beyond repair. My grill was filled with cigarette butts and my fire pit had trash in it. There is some shade. My site has two trees at the front of the pad on both sides of the RV. My bedroom stays nice and cold and I have a good view for my Starlink in the rear. The sites are close to each other, but there is some space. The good thing is that we are surrounded by the golf course. You don't get much noise from the base, because of the location, and because the FamCamp is surrounded by trees. You can hear the busy road outside the fence but I don't hear it much inside the RV. Every once in a while you'll hear an aircraft... but this is an air base, it's expected. We were told the community laundry was not working and to use the base laundry mat. Finally, one of the best parts about the campground, is the lady at outdoor rec that is in charge of the Famcamp. She is very nice and helpful. She will try to assist you with anything you need from directions to useful tips.

      Good location

Nice campground, maintained very well and clean. Laundry room and Propane fill on site so that was nice. RV Site was fairly level and easy to get into. Some sites are a bit close together and not long enough to keep your tow vehicle hooked up. A bit inconvenient if you’re only there for 1 night.

Clean facilities: Bull Run Regional Park maintains well-kept restrooms and shower buildings. Yvonne B. specifically mentioned, "The best review I can give is of the bathrooms. They're worth staying again alone. Locking doors, individual stalls. Hot dog. Best camping showers I've ever had."

Privacy between sites: Pohick Bay Campground features campsites with good spacing and natural barriers. Robert P. shares, "We stay here at least 6 trips a year. Nice layout," emphasizing the campground's popularity with repeat visitors seeking sites with adequate separation.

    What you should know

Weekend noise levels: Some parks experience higher noise levels during peak times. At Pohick Bay, Kelli T. reported, "This place is packed full of people who like to stay up late and make lots of noise. Park rules aren't very well enforced."

Pricing considerations: Washington DC / Capitol KOA charges premium rates compared to other area campgrounds. According to Guerrmo, "Expensive/Not a Great Value. Stayed at nicer campgrounds for significantly less money," suggesting budget-conscious campers may want to consider alternatives.

Seasonal facilities: Most campgrounds in the region operate with limited services during winter months. Pohick Bay remains open year-round, with Josh J. noting, "Nice and quiet here during winter more so during week than weekends," indicating reduced crowds during off-season visits.

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds require advance bookings, especially during peak season. Little Bennett Campground allows reservations up to 137 days in advance, with one camper mentioning they "Reserved 137 days prior to arriving."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Lacy Oasis Campground provides a natural setting designed for children to explore. Terrance D. shares, "My agency took about 25 children there last week and they did not want to leave, neither did I," highlighting how the campground appeals to younger visitors.

Water features: Bull Run Regional Park offers water recreation options during summer months. A visitor mentioned there's a "nice looking pool area," though adding it was "too cold" during their spring visit, indicating seasonal availability of water amenities.

Educational opportunities: Pohick Bay provides wildlife viewing opportunities, with Kathie M. observing, "Eagles everywhere!" This natural feature adds educational value to family camping trips through wildlife observation.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Bull Run campground has variable site grading. Drew M. advises, "My site had a slight slope, but was easily overcome using additional blocks on the low side to get the trailer level," suggesting RVers should bring leveling equipment.

Check-in procedures: Little Bennett has specific check-in protocols for larger rigs. One RVer explained they were "Instructed by staff via gate phone to proceed to campsite as check-in at camp store is at dead end with insufficient turning space for pickup towing 28ft bumper pull."

Signal strength: Cell service varies at area campgrounds. At Little Bennett, an RVer reported "1 bar Verizon" and "No WIFI," indicating limited connectivity options for those needing to stay connected.

Power reliability: Weather can affect campground utilities. A Little Bennett camper mentioned, "Trees falling on Park power lines caused power outage for hours," highlighting the need for backup power options during storms.
