Youghiogheny River Lake

Overview

The Mill Run Camping Area is located on Youghiogheny River Lake in the heart of the Laurel Highlands. The lake spans the Mason-Dixon Line between Pennsylvania and Maryland. Clean waters, forested mountains and steep-sided valleys provide an unsurpassed setting for recreational opportunities.

Recreation

Camping, fishing, boating, water skiing, hiking, biking, picnicking and sightseeing are the area's most popular activities. Boaters consider Youghiogheny River Lake, with its 16-mile length and channels up to one-half mile wide, the best powerboating and water skiing lake in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Facilities

The campground contains 30 sites that are all self-contained. Flush toilets, drinking water and a dump station are available. There is also a beach, boat launch and children's play area located in the campground.

Natural Features

The country surrounding the lake is made up of narrow valleys and high rounded hills with steep slopes. Much of the land is covered with northern hardwoods including beech, sugar maple, white ash, yellow poplar and basswood. A variety of wildlife makes its home around Youghiogheny River Lake, including deer, turkey, grouse, rabbit and squirrel.

Nearby Attractions

Some of Pennsylvania and Maryland's finest state parks surround Youghiogheny Lake. Ohiopyle State Park is known for some of the best whitewater in the East and is often the location of national kayaking competitions.

Mix of Good and Bad

We stayed here because we needed easy access to the lake and the Outflow campground on the PA side of Yough lake was fully booked on the weekend. By contrast, only the lower loops closer to the lake and stream were booked at this campground. The upper loop was essentially empty. We chose site 11 because it was the farthest back and only potentially had a neighboring site on one side due to a hill on the other side.

The site itself was nice and level. It was long enough for our 22' trailer and our tow vehicle, but it was pretty narrow. We could not put the picnic table beside the trailer and the fire pit was a little close to the car for comfort. Many of the sites were irregular shaped and small. Many would not accommodate a trailer. It looked like they all had a concrete border around the site that didn't leave much room for error when back in. The road around the campground is a single lane dirt road with trees right next to the road, so backing in had it's challenges. Our site was quiet and we could not hear any noise at all coming from the lower loop that was pretty full. It looked pretty congested down there. Sites were very close together and not a lot of room to maneuver.

All the sites have pretty heavy tree cover. We did not get any charge from our solar panel despite it being a clear day. I only saw one fresh water spigot that was in the grassy area between several sites. There are clean bathrooms, but no showers. There is also a dump station near the bathroom.

Getting to the campground was ok for us, but as others have mentioned, you need to watch your route. Do not attempt to coming from Route 40 down Braddock's Run Rd to Leach Road. Leach Rd is a single lane dirt road that is very steep and rough. We drove out that way without the trailer and it was still questionable. Coming in the other way down Mill Run Rd is also pretty tight. It is 1-1.5 lanes for about 1.5 miles, so good luck if there is traffic coming the other way.

Good for a quick overnight

The hosts were readily available at check-in and friendly.  The site's gravel was so firmly packed it was impossible for me to get my tent stakes hammered in. Thankfully it wasn't a windy night so the tent stayed put just fine. Sites aren't very private so the neighbors will really make or break your experience here. I had a nice quiet night.

I'd return with the following caveats: Sites 1-14 feel much safer in terms of flood risk if there is any precipitation. They're also close to the flush toilets [Which were very clean!] unlike the other two loops where the sidewalk is steep up to the restrooms. This is a popular fishing spot first thing in the morning for locals, expect day use visitors starting as early as 6am.

check water level before going

it was a mud swamp with res levels very low. but bear prints and a dozen other critter paw prints made it fun.
