      Kisatchie Bayou Complex

"Ranger Review: INNO Aero Light 2 (2 bike) at Kisatchie Bayou Recreation.."

      CAMPGROUND REVIEW:

Located inside the Kisatchie National Forest, Kisatchie District, this campground is great. This section of National Forest is home to over 30 miles of nature trails. The trails are for hiking, biking, horseback riding and off road vehicle riding. This campground is just steps away from the bayou where you can launch a canoe or kayak depending on the water level. Fishing and swimming are great pastimes here. The site has a grassy area and fire pit. There are vault toilets and NO WATER so be prepared for that. The day use area offers picnic tables, fire pits and grills. There are 2 different sites for camping on either side of the day use area. The day use area has a lot of local traffic but we did not encounter a lot of overnight campers. It is very secluded and the sound of the bayou is serene. There are lots of wildlife sounds at night but we didn't see anything more than a squirrel. We loved our stay here. We hiked, biked, and relaxed in the low waters of the bayou.

NOTE - Kisatchie Bayou Recreation Complex Camping/Day Use is the same area as Kisatchie Bayou Campground

      PRODUCT REVIEW:

As a Ranger for the Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time - today I tested the INNO Aero Light 2 (2 bike) hitch rack.

      www.innoracks.com

This bike rack made our trip so easy. It was easy to set up, easy to install (my 8 yr old did it). The simple hitch design slides right into a standard 2" hitch receiver or can be adjusted to 1 1/4". The screw bolt came with it along with a wrench for tightening on the receiver. We easily secured 2 bikes to the rack. Bike weight needs to be less than 33 lbs., have a top tube and a seat tube. Frame size 1/2" - 2 1/4". We loved this rack for its sturdiness and lightweightedness. It traveled great, we drove with the rack on my SUV for over 300 miles and we never had any problems. A great feature is the easy fold down option to allow access to the back of the car. This rack also features great locking mechanisms. You can lock the rack at the hitch as well as lock the built in strap around the bikes. As our little one grows and his bike gets bigger, we will definitely get a larger INNO rack to carry all the bikes. For now, the 2 bike rack is working great.

Pros: lightweight, easy install, easy fold down feature, great locking mechanisms.

      Cons: None

      Backbone Trail

Primitive camping along the 10mi Backbone trail. Took out the hammock and camped out around the halfway mark along the trail. You can set up shop around an old fire pit or make one of your own. I chose the latter. The backbone trail has to be the prettiest trail in the state of Louisiana. It's really the only place in the state to experience actual hills. It reached 23 degrees at night which was one of the coldest temperatures recorded in the state this year. A must do!

      Colfax RV Park

      Fishing in the Red River

This RV campground allows tents (at RV prices). The sites are big with full hookups. There is a nice playground for the kids as well as a nice shower house. The park has lots of picnic areas (34) set up under shade trees. Some sites have tent pads, but not all. They all have picnic tables and fire pits. It is a nice friendly campground with lots of boats and fisherman. You can make reservations or first come first serve. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

The park has a nice free day use boat launch as well as a floating dock with a fish cleaning station. The park is very clean and does not smell fishy. Really nice place, but at $32 a night, it was a little steep for me.

There is a security gate for after hours access. Comfort stations at boat launch and camping area. There is a wash house with washer, dryer and showers (heated and cooled). There are 2 picnic shelters with 6 picnic tables in each.

      Nice private campground

Nice location with a beautiful view of the hills. There is full hookups with a Bathhouse and free WiFi. Entrance road is gravel and very steep but I was able to drive my 34โ€™ motor home up pulling my jeep no problem. The owner does not stay on site but he did meet us there when we arrived. Not far from Natchitoches , LA. There is a big Christmas festival there late November and December with lots of lights.

      Clean & Quiet

We stopped at this site just for 1 night of our trip and were very happy with our stay. Super friendly staff, clean bathroom and laundry facilities, full hookups and very quiet. In the wild so expect bugs but nothing that made our stay uncomfortable. 3 gas stations right up the road-2 of which are RV friendly. Would definitely stay here again.

      Fish, bike, hike

We camped at site 363, not too bad, definitely needs upgrades. Not enough space between campers to even light a fire. There are miles of beautiful hiking trails, but beware of snakes! The bathrooms were recently updated so they were really nice. Also the laundry facilities were clean! Not too many wild flowers this trip. ๐Ÿ˜ž

    Guide to Bentley

Chicot State Park and Kisatchie National Forest provide rustic and primitive yurt camping options near Bentley, Louisiana. Situated in central Louisiana's pine-dominated woodlands, the area features gently rolling terrain with elevations ranging from 100-300 feet above sea level. Local camping conditions vary seasonally with hot, humid summers and mild winters, creating year-round opportunities for outdoor recreation.

    What to do

Hiking trails: Kisatchie Bayou Complex offers extensive trail networks with varying difficulty levels. "The backbone trail has to be the prettiest trail in the state of Louisiana. It's really the only place in the state to experience actual hills," notes Tyler B. from Kisatchie Bayou Complex.

Biking options: Paved roads throughout the region provide excellent cycling terrain. "I biked most of the paved roads in the state park and was able to go 13 miles without doubling anywhere," shares Nick U. from North Campground โ€” Chicot State Park.

Winter festivals: The area offers seasonal attractions beyond summer months. "Not far from Natchitoches, LA. There is a big Christmas festival there late November and December with lots of lights," mentions Mark J. from Magnolia Hill RV Park.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Campgrounds offer well-spaced sites for a more secluded yurt camping experience near Bentley. "The sites are big with full hookups. There is a nice playground for the kids as well as a nice shower house," reports Paula W. from Colfax RV Park.

Natural swimming areas: Many sites provide water access for cooling off during hot months. "Picnic tables and grills available. Swimming, camping, hiking, and canoeing can all be done here. Toilets but no running water. Great area to spend the day and swim!" explains Wendy D. from Kisatchie Bayou Complex.

Wildlife viewing: The region supports diverse ecosystems with observable wildlife. "Saw some big gators especially by the boat ramp," warns Pam G. from Chicot State Park, highlighting the importance of remaining vigilant around water features.

    What you should know

Limited facilities: Some sites offer minimal amenities requiring advance preparation. "Toilets are available by the parking lot, but no sinks. Bring extra toilet paper just in case they run out," advises Gabriella L. from Kisatchie Bayou Complex.

Seasonal crowds: Popularity varies throughout the year affecting campsite availability. "The only down side is that it can get a little crowded and noisy on busy weekends," mentions Toby D. from Chicot State Park.

Terrain challenges: Some campgrounds feature difficult access roads. "Entrance road is gravel and very steep but I was able to drive my 34' motor home up pulling my jeep no problem," reports Mark J. from Magnolia Hill RV Park.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer dedicated play areas for children. "There were almost no other campers there so it helps to go in the middle of the week. The staff was very friendly and they had a great hiking path and playground for our 5 year old," shares Nick U. from Chicot State Park.

Wildlife safety: Teach children about local wildlife precautions. "There are miles of beautiful hiking trails, but beware of snakes!" warns Cat R. from North Campground โ€” Chicot State Park.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Verify utility connections when booking yurt or RV sites. "Very clean and quiet park. Large sites with grill, fire pit, and picnic table," notes Shirley B. from Colfax RV Park.
