    Louisville South KOA

Close to Louisville and Bourbon Tours

The Louisville South KOA is approximately 25 miles south of downtown Louisville in Shepardsville, KY. The location is easy to find off the exit of 65(which also has a Walmart and other stores nearby to resupply).

The campground has both pull through gravel sites, back-in, and tent sites. The sites were close to each other but provided plenty of space for the average sized rig. Many were longer than other KOAs, which enabled the tow vehicle and TT to be parked. Full hook-ups and 30/50 amp services at the sites, some leveling required. The campground store is well stocked and the employees are very friendly.

There is a pool(no hot tub-filled in with stones), play/game area, bounce pillow, and 2 miles of hiking trails around the campground. While the campground was nice, there is a lot of“stuff”(old broken trailers, mowers, etc) laying around the edges and in need of mowing between the sites. These items tend to take away from the overall welcoming feeling of the campground.

This being said, the wifi was strong and it is very convenient to sightseeing around Nashville, especially for the price of$54 per night.

    Depends when you go

We rented a cabin during the off-season and our cabin was cute - very old fashioned. What we found out quickly that was everything was pretty much closed, including the main lodge restaurant that we had hoped to eat at.

The indoor pool WAS open and a pretty decent size. Our kids had a blast romping around in it and the next day we hiked one of the Park trails and were able to do some geocaching, which they loved.

It would be a longish walk to the Lodge pool from the cabins. I don’t know if everyone has a golf cart in the summer, but I imagine it gets packed. There was some really cool larger cabins and at least the section we were in, you had a nice view of the marina.

We found the view of the lakes beautiful and would absolutely go back a bit more during the season to take advantage of the lake activities. I say that even though we found mice droppings in our kitchen - the staff took care of it right away and gave us a partial refund.

    Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

    Wonderful state park

This is a larger state park that includes a restaurant, golf course, pool, etc. but also some nice trails to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The Cumberland State Scenic Trail is the local long trail, which can be access from the park. This park is close to town, the highway, and some other natural areas. The campground includes a number of similar loops, all wooded, nice and modern with the typical state park amenities. Cabins are available too They also have a moderate backpacking trail that we didn’t try, but would be perfect for first-time backpackers (since you can shower and eat at a buffet afterwards).

Yay: kayak and boat rentals. Something for everyone. Love the bridge over the water.

Nay: parts can be a little crowded, a little expensive.

Surprise: the on site restaurant is quite fancy---we went to an elegant wedding here and stayed for camping. They have a weekend buffet with rather fancy food and great quality. Also check out nearby Rock Island State Park for surreal waterfall swimming.

    Horrible experience, nasty owners

Horrible place with very hateful, nasty owners. They lied to me on a booking website, insulted me for asking about discrepancies in what's advertised, would not describe what's inside the cabin and, because I asked questions about the place, called me bigoted stuff, called me not an American knowing I'm a US citizen, and later kept messaging me their hate on the booking site, harassing me.

    Nice

There was lots to do at this KOA. There was corn hole, ladder ball, pool, walking trails, access to the river, cat fish pond, small dog park, and washers & dryers. You could bring your RV, travel trailer, tent camp, or rent a cabin. I’m sure I’m forgetting something. The spots were close together. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The park was clean and well maintained.

    Disappointed

We have a tent which attaches to our truck— no hook ups. Everywhere we go we get a tent site. This campground would not let us get a tent site because we “sleep in the bed of our truck.” We reluctantly rented a cabin because we needed a place to stay for the night. We told them our set-up & that we’ve never been denied a tent site, but they still refused. WiFi was fickle. Got on then would get bumped off.

    Remote, Quiet, and Beautiful

We camped here when we did a trip to Mammoth Cave NP. This campground has plenty of campsites and some cabins. They offer long term stays here too. The campground is close to Lake Cumberland which is a beautiful very large man made lake. The campground itself has nice and clean bathrooms and showers and the staff is very nice and friendly. It has a pool, playground, and a nice game room. It is a bit off the beaten path but it was a pleasure staying here. The campsites are set up nicely with plenty of room and they even have small wooden fence dividers. Nice little touch.

    Good camp ground

My family and I have camped here most of my life. There has been lots of improvements to the camp ground. There is also several shelters you can rent for different events. There are hiking trails near the entrance of the camp. There is several different types of camp areas ranging from primitive to cabins. There are several play ground areas close by for the kids to play. You can bring your boats along and put them in right there they have 2 different ramps on either side of the camp ground. The only thing I would add is another bath house at the lower end of the camp areas. Something for everyone.

    Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

Beautiful state park, remote and quiet.

We had a great time. Bring the bug spray, sunscreen and plenty of exention cords. The campground needs investment as majority of the sites are narrow with difficult positions for hooking up and leveling, make sure you pay attention. To each site description. The Full hookup/Ada sites are new, the rest are vintage from the 70s, but have there charm. The park is super hilly and very spread out. The bathrooms and cabins are bare bones, but clean. Our site at 94 was huge double site. Lots of wild life, the mice ate thur what ever they could find and vultures will go through your trash, so button up the site for a day on the lake.

    Really nice!

We stayed here one night. It's a small campground about 35 mins from Louisville and has about 40ish sites for RVs with electric and water, some with sewage. Our site was fairly small and pretty close to other sites but it was easy enough to get into and fit our 12ft pop up without issue. They have 2 bathrooms(the one by the laundry/store is very nice!), a catch and release pond(small, but there are small bluegill and some bass), a nice playground, clean pool, store on site, and overall we had a great time. There are also several connections for wifi, and cable(we didn't try it). The staff seemed very nice. Our site without sewage was $30 plus tax, they also offer tent sites and small cabins($40-50 with air conditioning) if that's your thing. Our site was nice and shaded. We were disturbed a few times by trains in the middle of the night- otherwise it was pretty peaceful and quiet.

    Pulaski County Park

Beautiful, but crowded and the crowd isn’t usually child friendly.

This campground is in a great location. Only a 10 minute drive from Somerset, the “big” city, for supplies & food.

Theres a very large walking trail, and archery area. You can put a boat right in at their little dock as well. The lake view is gorgeous. There’s many places for kids to play, a basketball court, volleyball court, disk golf, and a small beach area.

The cost of camping there is very affordable. They also have little cabins you can rent.

Despite the no alcohol rule, there’s still a lot of partying at night. No one really enforces that. It can get loud and I have heard from friends incidences of theft and cars getting scratched up at night.

The campsites are close together, so perhaps we just got unlucky with our “neighbors”. We do visit a lot during the day just to swim at the lake and give the kids playtime.

    Louisville South KOA

    Beautiful Park near Louisville

Louisville South KOA is a beautiful park, well maintained, with lots of green grass. It upholds more than the standard quality of a KOA and is a KOA Holiday property which means it has more to do than the journey parks. They have a nice community area in the middle with things for dogs and kids to do. They have a centrally located bath house and several cabins on the property. There are several longer term campers, lots of overnighters, and during the weekday it wasn’t difficult to get a space. On the weekends the park fills up so if you’re here for work call ahead of schedule to maximize potential of getting a spot here for longer.

The staff is very friendly, and accommodating. They take great care of the park and they are seen cleaning and working frequently all over the park.

Cellular signal is really good for AT&T and TMobile so streaming and working was easy.

There are lots of food delivery places, and small restaurants to go to as well.

    Louisville South KOA

    Clean and fun. Nice location.

My family visited Louisville South at the beginning of June for an extended family trip.

Pros- Lots of activities for kids. Nice pool, great playground, bounce pad. Bike rental. Decent (not spectacular) hiking trails. The RV sites with patio were very nice, but could be bigger.

Cons- some (not all) of the staff. One lady in particular was always rude, and didn’t like answering questions. There was a security light for the bounce pad that was on all night long, and thoroughly illuminated the adjacent tent sites. My brother’s family of 6 did not sleep well. This is something that is easily corrected by installing a shade over one edge of the light, but the staff didn’t seem to care.

    Lake Shelby Campground

Not the worst place, but close...

First, the good: Lake Shelby was easy to find. The signs were easy to see and tent sites are well marked. The office, RV area and restrooms were easy to find and also well marked. The tent sites were shaded by nice trees and were located right next to the lake. The group tent sites looked nice and had shade and open areas. You can rent a paddle boat or canoe. However, there has to be an adult in the canoe for rental. There are several docks and a boat ramp. You have to pay to launch and there is an honor box for that. The campsite itself, was mostly flat and partially shaded. The fire pit was nice as well. Now, the bad: The lake was brown and had an oily film across the top. It smelled of dead fish and something else that I couldn't identify. I saw people fishing, but I never saw anyone actually catch anything. The tent sites were down a dead end road, however the amount of cars that went past our site made me feel like there was a parade that lasted almost the entire time we were there. The paddle boat lost steering when we were halfway around the lake. The only thing we could do was go in a circle. It took 20 minutes for them to send someone to assist us. There was a trash can next to our site, however, it was nearly full when we arrived and no one ever emptied it. The restrooms are located at the RV parking area, so we had to drive to use them. In my opinion, the restrooms should have been built in between the RV sites and tent sites to make them easier to access by walking. Overall, I didn't hate my time at Lake Shelby, but there was nothing great enough to make me return or recommend it to friends.

    Dirty Derby

WE went to this KOA during the kentucky derby weekend, so of course you can expect it to be packed, we made reservations months ahead. When we got there is was not only packed, but there was no one enforcing the quiet hours, and it seemed like the cleaning staff could not keep up. There were loud people all through the night, and trash was overflowing everywhere. I'm not sure what it's like during other weeks of the year, but during the kentucky derby week it is a hot mess.

Very friendly and helpful. We pass through this area probably several times a year and this will be our go to campground. In June had reservations at my old Kentucky home SP. That was going to be a disaster. Small uneven sites. We found White Acres and went there. Perfect!!

    So close to everything

Tucked between Green River Lake and Lake Cumberland, the community of Columbia serves as a gateway to all of the great fishing and watersports in south-central Kentucky. Located just off the Cumberland Parkway, Columbia is a convenient stop and an ideal location for those seeking a peaceful escape.

Resting in a landscape of rolling hills, near the waters of Russell Creek, Columbia is a pastoral place that puts you at ease. Still, among the tranquility, travelers will find plenty of amenities and amusements in this town of about 5,000 people, including lively eateries and inviting accommodations.

    Horse Cave KOA

    Very nice campground

We stayed at this KOA many years ago on our way home. I again needed an overnight stop on our way home & booked here again. WOW! things have changed.

We got a fabulous patio site that was twice the size of our camper. It had a gorgeous view of the Kentucky hills. Full hook up.

The sites all looked very nice. They had teepees, covered wagons & a couple of treehouses. A nice area for tents as well.

The pond is catch & release.

    The pool wasn't open yet.

The bathrooms were outstanding! Recently remodeled? Clean as well.

They had a nice camp store I really didn't get to explore.

    So many activities for kids.

The worst thing I can say about it is there is highway noise from I-65, but really I feel we've had worse.

Looks like a nice base camp for the surrounding area.

Thanks office ladies for the Derby pie!

    Horse Cave KOA

Great bath house, some nice sites

They have recently built a new bath house and it’s awesome. It has rooms that each have a toilet, sink and shower. Total privacy! Nice and clean as well. Big points for this amenity.

We had a new site, 6, totally paved and great view of the conestoga wagons and pastures. Came with a movable fire pit and nice picnic table. I think it’s the best site.

Our main issue was the dump station, horrible layout. What takes us maybe 10 minutes took over 25. Plan ahead or decide to dump elsewhere.

The area around the KOA is a bit suspect. You can see an adult store, pass a confederate store on the way into the KOA and have business that are abandoned . While the KOA cannot prevent these things it’s worth noting for travelers. The KoA is a 4 star, if I factored in the area it would be a 3.

Easy trip down to Mammoth Cave. Very close to Hidden River and Kentucky Down Under.

Green River Lake State Park Campground

Good spot for exploring the river

Our primitive site had a view of the river and a single tree for shade. Many of the other campsites had ample shade, so definitely check before you reserve, if possible. Lots of amenities (like newly installed WiFi and a store) that we didn’t use the two days we were there, but had we stayed longer I’m sure we would have appreciated them. There were a lot of RVs and families there, so don’t expect it to be quiet in the campground. That’s what kayaking is for!

We stopped in nearby Greensburg on the way to rent a kayak, as we’d heard the closest marina(s) to the campground only had pontoons and larger craft. The river itself was wonderful to explore via kayak, and we ended up barely hiking.

Green River Lake State Park Campground

    Beautiful when there’s no crowd

We stayed at this beautiful park in early November. There were only a few other campers so it was peaceful and very pretty. We enjoyed the lake views and fall colors everywhere.

The downside was the store was closed and the wifi we expected wasn’t on. Since this was a working trip, we had to go to town and get wifi at the library (5 stars there!) that meant less time to explore all the trails.

If you go in peak season, the campsites are very close together with few trees, so you may feel a bit crowded.
