Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground on the Kentucky River

Great park next to the river

This is a small well maintained campground right on the Kentucky river. It is down in a hollow which makes it secluded and quiet. There is a dock and a boat ramp. The customer service is exceptional. Under new management since November, they are making some very nice upgrades. 30/50 amp full hook ups with a number of pull throughs. The sites next to the river are level and easy to back into. There is a pavilion and a pool. It is about 30 minutes from Lexington and about 8 miles to the closest town. The one lane road coming in might give you the willies but it is worth it. They have 5 WiFi connections making this some of the best campground WiFi I have ever had. This is a lovely spot with nice amenities.

    Louisville South KOA

Close to Louisville and Bourbon Tours

The Louisville South KOA is approximately 25 miles south of downtown Louisville in Shepardsville, KY. The location is easy to find off the exit of 65(which also has a Walmart and other stores nearby to resupply).

The campground has both pull through gravel sites, back-in, and tent sites. The sites were close to each other but provided plenty of space for the average sized rig. Many were longer than other KOAs, which enabled the tow vehicle and TT to be parked. Full hook-ups and 30/50 amp services at the sites, some leveling required. The campground store is well stocked and the employees are very friendly.

There is a pool(no hot tub-filled in with stones), play/game area, bounce pillow, and 2 miles of hiking trails around the campground. While the campground was nice, there is a lot of“stuff”(old broken trailers, mowers, etc) laying around the edges and in need of mowing between the sites. These items tend to take away from the overall welcoming feeling of the campground.

This being said, the wifi was strong and it is very convenient to sightseeing around Nashville, especially for the price of$54 per night.

Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground on the Kentucky River

    Cummings ferry campground

Small park restrooms and showers. Very clean. Nice pool. Camp store offers basics. Fairly close to shopping groceries etc. staff was friendly 30/50 amp service didn’t count the number of river view sites. But quite a few. Some sites have 20 X 12 elevated decks. Full hook ups. Pet friendly. Was very quiet the week we stayed. Didn’t feel like bringing the camper home so payed for another week and drive back the following week. Cell service. Isn’t the best WiFi was available if I remember. Correctly rates were reasonable

    Camp Carlson Army RV Park

    Small quiet dispersed

Very quiet. Two fenced dog runs that were slightly overgrown when we first arrived but were cut when the rain allowed. Paved roads throughout but very few paved sights. WIFI and cell service very limited would advise a antenna for long term. Office personnel were extremely helpful and understanding. I had truck problems and it extended our stay so I just had to move trailer to different site. Ft Knox is just a few miles away.

Overall this is a great FamCamp. Will definitely stay again.

    Pioneer Playhouse Campground

This is all about the theater...not the camping

This place has some fascinating history and a unique outdoor summer stock theater experience. The oldest outdoor theater in Kentucky with 5 productions running through the summer months. Definitely a good time and casual dining evening with stories of many famous faces that have graced the stage: John Travolta, Lee Majors, Jim Varney...to name a few. The campground has 35 sites with little elbow room; all have electric(30 amp) and water, gravel/grass pads, shower facilities and bathrooms, and they do have a"rustic" dump station. Many of the sites seem to have long term tenants...so this is best for a one night stop and a show. The town of Danville has what you need for supplies and dining, loads of historical sites in the area and of course there is a Bourbon Distillery that must make the list of activities. pioneerplayhouse.com/visit-us/campground/

    Lake Shelby Campground

    Small and quiet

Came here in our 40’ class A. Very weird at first as the sites are 20 feet long, but they allow front ends to stick out. Very nice park on a lake. All new electrical and water, all sites have 50 amp despite the website stating only 30 amps as recent update. Nice showers, regular campground showers. Good wifi, cable and cell service. Good for a night or two.

    LockRidge Park

    A Diamond in the Rough

This is a true gem and one not to be missed. Unfortunately, our stay was limited to one night, however, we will definitely be returning to take advantage of the many amenities included. Full hookups, laundry, bath house, general store, tastefully designed accommodations, activities, and even an outdoor theatre; everything you need for an enjoyable long-term stay. The Site was quite large and accommodated our 24 ft rig and truck, and FH, which were very clean and well placed. Our site also provided partial shade, which in the warmer months would be very beneficial. Not to mention, the beautiful views with a lovely trail and lookout over Dix River that runs behind the property. Management/Owners were incredibly hospitable and friendly. We loved our overnight stay at Lockridge, it was quiet, peaceful, and absolutely beautiful. We camped at LockRidge Park in a Travel Trailer.

*TIP ~ Dix River runs behind the property, nearby there is a marina, waterfalls, trout fishing, and many other recreational activities. This venue also hosts events and has Harvest Host accommodations.

Guide to Lebanon

Campgrounds near Lebanon, Kentucky surround the Green River Lake region, with most sites operating from April through October during peak season. Winter camping options are limited due to seasonal closures at most public facilities. The area sits within Kentucky's Pennyrile region, characterized by rolling hills and limestone formations that influence the landscape around camping areas.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Green River Lake offers diverse fishing spots for camping visitors. "I gave Smith Ridge 5 stars because it offers a lot of great fishing spots and beautiful views. There isn't but maybe one trail there, and it's unmarked," notes one visitor at COE Green River Lake Smith Ridge. The area supports both shoreline and boat fishing access.

Swimming areas: Several campgrounds maintain designated swimming beaches during summer months. At Wilson Creek Recreation Area, campers report that "You're also only a short walk from the beach which is nice." The swimming areas typically open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with no lifeguards on duty.

Hiking trails: Some camping areas connect to trail systems with varying difficulty levels. One camper at Holmes Bend mentioned, "The best are the hiking trails. It's a short drive or walk thru the woods to trail head. Fishers bend has over 5 miles of trails." Trails range from easy lakeside paths to more challenging woodland routes.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the generous spacing between sites at rv parks near Lebanon, Kentucky. A visitor to Holmes Bend noted, "Most sites are spaced apart but close enough to make new friends like we did. Any site is well kept along with all the grounds." Site sizes vary by campground but generally accommodate standard camping setups.

Waterfront locations: Proximity to water remains a major draw for visitors to camping areas in the region. "The campground sets on a point with woods all the way around. There is plenty of shade with hiking path and a playground for kids," shared a camper about Smith Ridge Green River Lake. Many waterfront sites require advance reservation during peak season.

Peaceful atmosphere: Visitors frequently mention the quiet environment found at these campgrounds. At Camp on the Kentucky, campers appreciate the "beautiful view of the river and the owners have that down to earth southern hospitality. Nice little lodge area to sit outside or go inside with snacks, food, pool tables, and fireplace."

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly between camping areas. One camper at Smith Ridge noted, "Practically no cell service with Verizon or AT&T," while others report better service at campgrounds closer to towns. Prepare for limited connectivity at more remote sites.

Weather considerations: The region experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters. Campsites with shade become premium during summer months. A visitor to Pikes Ridge - Green River Lake observed, "All the RV sites are extremely open so there's no shade or privacy, but everyone has the same lovely view. Just a few sites are among the trees at the edge of the forest but further from the water."

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. Booking windows typically open 6 months in advance for Corps of Engineers campgrounds, while private RV sites near Lebanon, Kentucky may accept reservations up to a year ahead.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds maintain playground equipment for younger visitors. A camper at Wilson Creek Recreation Area shared, "There are only about 6 or 7 campsites for primitive camping, so it's very quiet. You're also only a short walk from the beach which is nice." Most playgrounds offer basic equipment without specialized features.

Beach considerations: When choosing sites for families with children, proximity to swimming areas matters. "Only down fall is if you want to swim you'll have to drive about a mile to the swimming area," noted one visitor about Smith Ridge, highlighting the importance of checking beach access before booking.

Safety features: Parents appreciate campgrounds with regular security patrols. One camper mentioned feeling secure at Wilson Creek because "The area is also patrolled at random hours throughout the night to make you feel a little safer, which is nice." Most campgrounds implement quiet hours from 10pm to 6am.

Tips from RVers

Electrical reliability: RV campers should prepare for potential power issues during peak demand periods. A Smith Ridge visitor reported, "They have a known power issue, 30amp service went out several times at the pole. Their solution was to use less appliances. There are other campgrounds on the lake that I would choose instead of this one for that reason."

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds require substantial leveling equipment. At Cummins Ferry RV Park, one RVer noted, "The sites here are not level. We used our normal 2x green blocks for the Jack, but needed all 10 of our leveling blocks, plus 8 paving stones to get the appropriate height." Prepare with adequate leveling gear when booking in this region.

Water hookup seasonality: RV campsites typically offer full water connections from April through October, with potential restrictions during freezing periods. During winter months, some campgrounds maintain communal water sources when individual site connections are winterized.
