Best Campgrounds near Lebanon, KY

Central Kentucky's Lebanon area provides access to several mixed-use campgrounds along the Green River Lake watershed. White Acres Campground offers year-round camping with tent, RV, and cabin options, while Green River Lake State Park Campground operates from April through December with similar accommodations plus glamping opportunities. Most established campgrounds in the region feature electric hookups, water access, and picnic tables, with several offering full RV hookups including sewer connections. The area's camping landscape includes both state park facilities and privately operated campgrounds, with many situated near water features that support fishing and boating activities.

Seasonal considerations affect campground operations throughout the region, with several facilities closing during winter months. Green River Lake State Park operates from April 1 to December 31, while My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground has a shorter season from April 1 to October 31. Many campgrounds require reservations, particularly during summer weekends and holiday periods. The terrain around Lebanon features rolling hills with varying site conditions. Campers should be prepared for potentially uneven camping pads at some locations. As one visitor noted about My Old Kentucky Home State Park, "Not a level site to be found in this small park. As in most Kentucky parks the electric & water poles are 1 to 2 extension cords away. BRING PLENTY of BLOCKS!"

Developed campgrounds in the area receive generally positive reviews for their proximity to outdoor recreation opportunities, particularly water activities. Green River Lake serves as a focal point for many camping areas, with boat-in access available at several campgrounds including CampFire Ridge RV Park and Pikes Ridge. Bathroom facilities and amenities vary significantly between locations, with some receiving praise and others criticism. A camper at Taylorsville Lake State Park mentioned, "The spots were spacious, and very nice picnic tables. We did a trail which was nice and went down to a boat ramp to see the lake." Many campgrounds in the region also serve as convenient bases for exploring Kentucky's bourbon distilleries, with Bardstown's My Old Kentucky Home State Park frequently mentioned as a good location for combining camping with distillery tours.

Army Corps of Eng Sites Are Excellent

Stopped by Aug 11 for one day after being down in TN. Clean, well maintained, spacious sites. Excellent staff. On the other side of Wolf Creek Dam from Lake Cumberland. There is a snack bar/bait shop on site. The National Fish Hatchery is beside the campground, along with the Trout Stream, which is a really neat man-made stream and wetland from the hatchery down to the Cumberland River.

    Louisville South KOA

    Avoid Louisville South KOA

My family of 5 has camped at KOAs across the country with our professionally converted 12’x6’ RV trailer (electrical, but no AC/septic). Upon arrival at Louisville South KOA, I checked in and was escorted to our site by staff. Moments later, we were approached by the campground owners who told us we could not stay because our trailer did not come from a factory with AC or septic.

I confirmed with KOA Corporate that no such rule exists, and this KOA’s justification was based on “KY Health Codes” which they could not show me in writing. Despite offering to tent-camp with our trailer in storage, we had to leave and pay $100 more to stay at a private campground over an hour away.

Nowhere on the Louisville South KOA website is this “rule” disclosed. This was a clearly discriminatory and arbitrary. If you travel in a custom trailer or unique camper, avoid this location.

    Schöner Platz

Sehr sauber nettes Personal, ein Nachteil der Platz liegt in der Einflugschneise des Flughafens. Auch die ganze Nacht hört man Fluglärm.😞

    Green River Park & Arboretum

    Quiet, pleasant, overnight spot (free)

We needed a spot near Mammoth Cave National Park (which was full). This small City Park in the town of Munfordville, only 25 miles away, fit the bill perfectly. The phone number connects you to their City Hall - they asked for the make, model, color and license plate number of our vehicle (so their police officer would know we belonged there), and told us spots are available on a "first come" basis but are almost always available. In our case, we were the only ones there on a Friday summer night.

The park is delightful: it's by a river, surrounded by trees, and has a paved path circling soccer and disc golf fields, a playground, and four pickleball courts. There also is a 4-mile trail. All of the day users left by 9 pm, and then we had the park to ourselves. It was a very quiet spot.

Access to the park is via a short one-lane road that has some very tight curves. The overnight spots aren't really set up for RVs - those also are accessed via tight turns and there isn't an adequate turnaround space at the end of the access road -- I parked in a spot knowing that I would have to back my 23' trailer down the access road in order to get to back to a larger parking lot area. For smaller RVs and trailers, camping here is manageable and recommended.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Many Lebanon-area campgrounds provide ample room between sites. At COE Green River Lake Smith Ridge, one camper observed, "I am currently here and I gotta say I am impressed. The bathrooms are clean, I am not close to my neighboring campers, the parking spots are huge, and it's a great area to walk around."

Wooded camping areas: Several campgrounds offer shaded sites with mature trees. "Very small campground and narrow roads. Many sites were not level and some sites were very short so make sure you review the site description... You did feel like you were in the woods so that was a plus," notes a camper at My Old Kentucky Home State Park.

Water activities: The Green River Lake watershed creates opportunities for various water-based recreation. A camper at Pikes Ridge - Green River Lake shared, "The best campground on GRL!!! Only flaw.... no showers!"

What you should know

Limited cell service: Many campgrounds in the area have spotty connectivity. At COE Green River Lake Smith Ridge, a visitor reported, "Practically no cell service with Verizon or AT&T."

Uneven terrain: Site levelness varies significantly throughout the region. One camper at Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground advised, "Overall this is a nice campground for primitive camping. The majority of the sites are spaced out and private but unfortunately I couldn't find any pictures online of the sites so the one we got was not private."

Varying bathroom quality: Facilities differ between campgrounds. A Smith Ridge visitor noted, "This campground is clean and the campsites are decent... However, if you need to use the showers or bathroom, they never fix anything. One bathroom hasn't had electric in two years and another women's bathroom only has hot water in one shower and the hand dryers don't work."

Choose primitive sites for groups: Some campgrounds offer more open tent camping areas. Look for full hookups: Many Lebanon-area camping spots provide complete RV services. A visitor to White Acres reported, "Simple campground with full hookups. Big sites. So much to do in Bardstown area."

Prepare for varying electric reliability: Power issues can occur at some sites. A Smith Ridge camper warned, "Location was excellent, close to the water. They have a known power issue, 30amp service went out several times at the pole. Their solution was to use less appliances."

Check site dimensions: Site sizes vary across campgrounds. One RVer at My Old Kentucky Home cautioned, "Very small campground and narrow roads. Many sites were not level and some sites were very short so make sure you review the site description. Also some had sewer hook ups and others did not."
