    Pilot Knob State Park Campground

Layout of campground would be challenging if full

General: A mixture of tent (non-electric) and electric sites, mostly arranged in several rows.

Site Quality: Mixed. Not all sites are level, and most do not have delineated parking pads (there is a small pavement indent to show where to access the site). A fire pit and picnic table complete the site. Most of the sites are too close together for our liking, however, when we were there (a Monday at the end of August, the day before school started), we were only one of three sites occupied so for our stay it didn’t matter.

Bathhouse: Basic but clean. My biggest complaint is there were no hooks or shelves for toiletries by the sinks. The showers looked nice but we did not use them.

Activities: Horseback riding (there are trails for this), hiking, fishing. Although we did see several trailheads, I did not have a map so didn’t explore them. There is an observation tower, but it is a two-mile walk/drive from the campground (on paved roads; I didn’t try to find hiking trails to get there).

Misc: A shout-out to the great host, Pam, who greeted us as we arrived. The observation tower, entrance gates, and picnic shelter were all constructed by the CCC and were beautiful. It almost seemed like the campground was an afterthought as it is outside the entrance gates and nowhere near the tower. The layout of the campground would be challenging if all sites were occupied.

    Tower Rock

Modern cabins and a beautiful park

The two cabins are fairly new and have all of the amenities. My mother-in-law stayed here while visiting recently and we enjoyed spending time at her cabin.

While camping is no longer allowed in Tower Rock park, you can still enjoy a walk down to the river or bicycling on the paved bicycle trail. Tube rentals are available nearby for the Iowa River, and a local outfitter will rent a boat for the day to fish Pine Lake or the small lake northwest of Steamboat Rock.

Pine lake is not that far away either and offers many fun activities.

    Dolliver Memorial State Park Campground

    Beautiful and tranquil

Dolliver State Park was our maiden voyage in our travel trailer and it was obvious we were pitiful newbies! The park's beauty and tranquility did get disturbed a couple times when our dogs got loose (newbs!). The park staff were friendly and very helpful as were our fellow campers. The sites are mostly level with picnic tables and fire rings. Sites range from shady to sunny and the reservation website depicts the sites with a small photo and details about the amount of slope and shade. Cell service was good but no WiFi without a hotspot for us. We had fun, learned a lot and plan to camp here again!

    Pilot Knob State Park Campground

    Great place!

Standard site without electric was only $10.00 a night which includes a nearby water spigot to fill your tank with. Put toilets and showers available. The friendly hosts made a point to come by to chat. Two fawns were born there, under one of the picnic tables and they were around all weekend. I’ll be back !

    Pine Lake State Park Campground

Pine Lake is an awesome state park

This campground is near home so I know it well.

The campground itself is nice, with some decent sized campsites, many having a great view of upper Pine Lake. There are flush toilets and showers. Campsites have electric hookups. It can get busy during peak season!

Some of the campsites are near the lake, some are near the road. Noise is usually not a problem as the road has a 35mph speed limit by the campground.

Things to do: (so much to list!)

    • Paddle on upper or lower Pine Lake
    • Fishing, shore or boat (lake, stream, or river)
    • Bicycle trails
    • Hiking trails (all around lower Pine Lake)
    • Beach swimming (lower only)
    • Float or paddle nearby Iowa River (tube and boat rentals nearby)
    • Eat, replenish supplies in nearby Eldora

What campers like

Privacy levels: Some cabins provide more seclusion than others. At Joe Sheldon County Park, one reviewer appreciated the "beautiful pull through campsites some full hook ups others with electronic and water."

Wildlife viewing: Early mornings provide opportunities to spot local wildlife. One camper at Pilot Knob State Park mentioned, "When driving to my site two fawns were laying near the playground."

What you should know

Cell service varies: Dolliver Memorial State Park has limited connectivity. A camper reported, "Cell service cuts out as you drive down into the park, and does not resume until you come back up and out. There's no wifi, and I'm not sure how satellite service would fare down here."

Reservation requirements: Most parks require advance booking during peak season. For Little Wall Lake County Park, "Some sites are reserveable online and some are first come first serve."

Firewood restrictions: Due to invasive species concerns, outside firewood may be prohibited. A Dolliver Memorial State Park visitor advised, "You can't bring in any wood outside the area because of the Elm Tree Borer possibly being transported, so you will need to go to Ft Dodge to buy some."

Site layout considerations: Some parks have tighter spacing between sites. One Dolliver Memorial visitor noted, "Sites can be a little squat in the middle loops, and no fhu [full hookups]."

Tips for camping with families

Special events: Some campgrounds host seasonal activities. A visitor to L. Brandt's noted, "The weekend we camped there was their Halloween trick or treating and all the campers were very nice."

Tips from RVers

Site layouts: Briggs Woods Park has areas suited for group camping. One RVer explained, "One area is good for a group of campers as the sites are in a circle. A walking bridge links the back loop to the other loop that has the bathhouse making it a shorter walk."

Utility hookups: Lizard Creek Ranch Camping provides full hookup options with good maintenance. A camper described it as "very nice park with a nice restaurant and many things to do in the area. Very pretty and taken care of."

Leveling challenges: Not all sites provide level parking. At Pilot Knob State Park, a reviewer reported, "Our space was out of level but manageable, and the bath house and outhouse were on the rustic side."

Seasonal considerations: Parks maintain different operating seasons. Pilot Knob State Park remains open year-round with winter camping options at $12/night for 30AMP hookups according to visitor reports.
