Eldon Wildlife Management Area

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Gravel crunches underfoot at the end of Umber Ave, where Eldon Wildlife Management Area provides a small dispersed camping area managed by Iowa DNR Wildlife. Drive to the road's end and you'll find a couple of informal spots, one of them sitting alongside a cornfield. No hookups, no restrooms, no reservations. Just a gravel turnaround and open ground.

The sites are uneven and sit in open grass with minimal shade, which matters in peak summer when temperatures can push into the 90s. A light breeze tends to move through, but campers should come prepared for sun exposure. Ticks are present in the long grass, so checking after walks through the area is worth the habit. On the upside, campsites near Eldon are not plentiful, making this a workable overnight stop for those passing through southeastern Iowa without many alternatives. Cell service is available, and campfires and pets are both permitted.

The site draws hunters, dispersed camping regulars, and travelers looking for a low-key stop without road noise. Rebecca W. calls it a "perfect dispersed camp site with no road noise or visitors." In early spring, the area comes alive with frog calls from nearby wetlands. For campers who want developed facilities nearby, McGowen Rec Area and Ottumwa City Park offer more structured options in the region. If you can handle the basics, this spot delivers a quiet night in rural Iowa.

Small space

It’s a small gravel turnaround and not very level in the grasses but if you have a pick of the spots you’ll be able to settle. There is very little shade and we’re here in 95° but there is a slight breeze. Nice, quiet, secluded spot to spend a couple of days. But watch out for the ticks in the long grass

Quiet and Secluded

We drive to the end of Umber Ave and found two spots perfect for camping. We chose the one nestled next to the corn field. Perfect dispersed camp site with no road noise or visitors.

Public Hunting Spot

Small lot for hunters to park and go. For a secluded spot, good enough to camp. As long as you don't need any utilities.
