Free camping in Sawtooth National Forest sits along a dirt road loop just off Highway 75, a few miles north of Sun Valley. Prairie Creek Camping has roughly six to a dozen designated sites arranged between the creek and the road, with a 10-day stay limit and no reservation system. No potable water is available on-site, and campers must practice bear-proof food storage. One vault toilet serves the campground.
The sites sit directly alongside Prairie Creek, which runs shallow enough to wade through in most spots. "The spots here are really fun because they are right on the creek," notes Dyani S., though she adds a caveat: the water runs cold. Fine dust covers the ground throughout, and flat spots vary in quality. Sightlines open toward Boulder Mountain, where mountain goats have been spotted on upper ridges with binoculars. Cell service is essentially absent, though Verizon users report a weak but occasionally usable signal.
Road noise from the highway carries into the sites during the day. Traffic drops off after dark, and the campground tends to quiet down considerably at night. Firewood is available to gather on-site. The Galena Lodge, roughly 15 minutes north, has food, mountain bike rentals, and hiking access. Nearby Boulder Yurt - Sun Valley Trekking and Sawtooth NF Dispersed off FR 912 give campers additional options in the area. Campers who prioritize dog-friendly camping near Sawtooth National Forest will find this campground fits that list, as pets are permitted throughout.
