Mountain View Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Sawtooth National Forest takes in Mountain View Campground, a small drive-in site managed by the US Forest Service near Stanley, Idaho. The campground sits directly on the water, with several sites giving campers immediate river access and the option to wade in without much effort. Fire pits and tables are in good condition, and vault toilets, drinking water, and a dump station are all on-site. The campground runs year-round, though summer fills sites quickly.

Water access is the defining feature here. One camper hung a hammock over the water for sleeping, which gives a sense of how close some sites sit to the edge. The highway runs nearby and generates noise during the day, but the sound of the river offsets some of it, and things tend to quiet down after 10 p.m. The campground has no more than nine sites, and reviewers note it can fill fast, particularly after word spreads that it has reopened or conditions are good.

Amenities are more complete than many Forest Service campgrounds. WiFi, cell service, a camp store, and available firewood make it a functional base for multi-day trips. Chinook Bay Campground sits just north if Mountain View is full. No motorized boats are permitted on the lake, making it well-suited to SUP and kayaking. Note that pets are not allowed. This is a first-come, first-served campground, so arriving early on summer weekends is the most reliable way to secure a site.

Campers regularly cited spacious sites with excellent river access and mountain views, plus clean facilities and good WiFi. Some road noise during the day, but most found it manageable with river sounds providing natural masking.

Beautiful water front

My son hung a hammock over the water for sleeping. We stayed in a camper van. Not crowded and we did not have a reservation.

Beautifully updated

One of those lucky days. Mountain Virw just reopened an hour before I got there after being closed for more than two years. Everything is brand new feeling! The fire pits are new, the tables not but they are in great shape. The vault toilets are new but the pits maybe aren’t. My site (14) is right on the river with easy access. The highway is close but the river drowns out some of the noise and then it gets quiet late. This is a first come first serve campground that I suspect will be full all of the time. I lucked out and got a site before it went public that it had reopened. Camped next to a member of High Pine Whiskey Yell and got invited to hear the band play that evening at The Lowman Inn. Awesome bluegrass band! And of course spent time with my body planted in the river.

Little Redfish Lake waterfront dream

This small (9 sites i believe) is right on Little Redfish Lake that has the very best view of the Sawtooth Range around. Even Redfish Lake doesn't sport views like this one. No motorized boats allowed on this Lake. No fishing. It is AWESOME for SUP and Kayaking though. Clean flush toilets. Water available behind the building. You do hear some street noise during the day, but after 10 pm we didn't notice any. The dump station is close to the lodge. There are also a public laundromat and showers there.. quarters. $2. For a shower. At the lodge down the street,, there are SUP, kayak, boat, bike, fishing rentals and a restaurant. The visitor center is great. Ranger lead talks every day.. Stanley is only about 3-4 miles to town. Food, drink adventures can all be found there.
