Coyote calls at night and deer crossing fog-covered roads at dawn set the tone at Whitetail Campground inside Farragut State Park, a large Idaho Parks and Recreation facility on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille near Athol. The campground sits within a conifer-heavy landscape, with fir and pine providing reliable shade over flat, level sites. Site 104, noted by at least one camper, runs large enough to accommodate an RV and tent together or two to three large tents side by side, and each site comes with a fire ring and picnic table. Campsites are close to one another, as is typical of state park campgrounds, though off-peak visits tend to thin the crowds noticeably.
The bathrooms here draw consistent attention. Krystal L. called them "probably the nicest campground bathroom I've ever seen," and multiple reviews echo that the facilities are cleaned regularly and kept in good condition. Free hot showers are available. Firewood is sold on site, and drinking water spigots are located close to the sites.
Lake Pend Oreille is accessible from the park, but campers should know the route down to the boat launch and swimming area involves a steep grade. Driving to the water makes sense if you have gear, kids, or limited mobility. The park also features disc golf courses, hiking and biking trails, a junior ranger program, a Tree to Tree obstacle course, and a museum housed in a former U.S. Naval brig. Hammocks are not permitted, and dogs are restricted from the swimming beach. Bayview, just a few minutes away, has food and supplies. Campers exploring campgrounds near Farragut State Park will find other options within the park, including Snowberry Campground nearby.
Reservations are available, and the campground is open year-round. RVs up to 35 feet are accommodated, though there are no hookups at the Whitetail sites. Rates have been reported around $27 per night. Whitetail works well for families and groups who want developed amenities, lake access, and a range of on-site activities without straying far from the campfire.
