Thimbleberry Group Camp — Farragut State Park

Large group camping takes center stage at Thimbleberry Group Camp, where a single expansive site accommodates both RVs and tents across wooded terrain within Farragut State Park. The campground handles groups of 50 or more with room to spare, offering multiple fire pits with grilling grates scattered throughout the area. Trees provide overhead coverage during weather events.

The facility includes vault toilets and bathrooms that reviewers consistently describe as well-maintained and stocked, though no shower facilities exist on-site. Potable water is available, though some campers prefer bringing their own. Fire pits dot the landscape with firewood available for purchase at the park's main office. The site prohibits hammocks and requires pets to remain leashed.

Winter camping opens the area to individual campers during colder months. "Firewood is available at the main office / ranger station down the street," notes Deanna D.. The nearby town of Bayview provides laundry services and coffee shops within minutes of the campground.

Hikers and mountain bikers can access park trail systems directly from camp, while lake activities require a short drive or walk. For smaller gatherings, Waldron Campground — Farragut State Park offers individual sites nearby.

Many campers appreciated the massive group site with excellent tree coverage and clean facilities. Common feedback included accommodation for large groups up to 50+ people with room to spare. Some concerns noted about limited shower access and check-in experience.

Group activities

Being from Kentucky I now rank myself as a lightweight after visiting Farragut State Park and realizing the weather people camp during in Idaho! Thimbleberry is a nice size group campground on the far side of Farragut SP. this is a basic area with room to spread out. Pit toilets , but no shower house.

If you want to visit the lake you will need to hike a minute or drive. There is a model plane field nearby and bird watching area. Bay view is nearby for laundry and most importantly COFFEE.

Group Site in Farragut State Park

If you have a large group, this is the place to be. This site is massive and can accommodate tents, RV’s, trailers, etc. Even with a lot of people, you can still seclude yourself from others. We had around 50 people and still didn’t even fill the camp to 1/4 of it’s capacity.

There are bathrooms and vault toilets, no showers. Both are kept stocked and clean. There’s water on site but it didn’t taste the greatest so we brought our own. The trees provide fantastic coverage in the event of rain (which we had a ton of). There are fire pits all around and they have grates for grilling pans and what not. No water hook ups. Firewood is available at the main office / ranger station down the street. Hammocks are not permitted here. Animals are allowed but must be on a leash or chain.

This site is also opened during the winter months to individual campers. We fully took advantage of this and stayed for 3 nights last winter. Farragut is beautiful in the winter and I highly recommend it if you’re up for the cold. We were fortunate enough to meet some sled dog trainers at camp and even saw them along the trail.

Perfect for family reunions

The park has new showers/restrooms that are absolutely beautiful! Only one in our loop- so quite a jaunt. Playgrounds. Near a lake for those who love water sports.

Checking in wasn’t the best experience. The lady at the desk was cross. When we mentioned we had stayed four nights at a previous location she went off on a tirade asking if we realized that we could only spend 14 consecutive nights in state parks.

We arrived at noon and got the last spot and it was pricy ($35.74). Checkout was 1:00pm but we were not allowed to bring our Popup trailer into the loop before 2:00 because they said the site had to be cleaned and that the hosts got mad if people came earlier. So we sat in the hot parking lot by the visitors center waiting for 2:00pm... only to be told we would probably need to move our vehicles before the lot filled with RVs which were coming in. Where ?
At the campsite, we gave the table a good scrub down.
Walk in sites are rare during peak season. You need a reservation. We were lucky but were told we can only stay one day. We won’t return.

Group Camping at it's Best

I've camped at every group camp site at Farragut with a group of 50+ women mountain bikers. Farragut State Park does group camping the best. My favorite group camps are Thimbleberry (horse friendly) and Locust Grove (lake views). But there are 7 group camps to choose from. Facilities vary, but all have flush toilets Camping areas are wooded Boreal Forest areas. Park amenities include lake access, miles of hiking, horse and mountain bike trails, a frisbee golf course and a new tree to tree ropes course ($$). There are mountain goats viewable by binoculars across the lake. The little town of Bayview is five minutes away if you get tired of camp cooking and want to sit down and have a meal served to you.
