Woody Gap Campground - Appalachian Trail

Woody Gap is located on the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail, making it a popular access point for hikers. It sits at a scenic mountain gap in the North Georgia mountains near Dahlonega. The area offers beautiful views and serves as both a starting point for day hikers and a resupply point for thru-hikers on the AT. The campground provides convenient access to some of the most picturesque sections of the Georgia portion of the trail.

The Woody Gap Trailhead parking area is easily accessible from GA Highway 60. There's a dedicated parking lot right at the gap that serves as the trailhead. Look for signs marking the Appalachian Trail crossing. The parking area is well-marked and visible from the road. It provides direct access to the trail in both northbound and southbound directions, making it convenient for day hikers and backpackers alike.

From Woody Gap, you can access several excellent hiking options on the Appalachian Trail. The most popular route is the 3-mile hike to the summit that offers spectacular views. Heading north on the AT leads to Blood Mountain, one of Georgia's highest peaks with panoramic vistas. The trail offers varying degrees of difficulty, with the first mile often being more crowded but becoming more secluded as you venture further. There are numerous primitive camping spots along these trails, particularly past the initial viewpoints.

Woody Gap Trailhead offers basic facilities to support hikers and campers. There are restrooms located about a minute's walk from the parking area, though they don't include shower facilities. The area features primitive camping opportunities with spaces suitable for tents and hammocks. There's water available nearby for those camping. The parking lot provides ample space for vehicles, and there are camping spots both visible from the trailhead and more secluded areas up the trail that offer privacy.
