Deep Gap Shelter - AT

Great shelter with close water access, Bear box for food storage, and a fire pit. Kept us dry in the rain! Note: there is a resident mouse that will pay you a visit (not uncommon for shelters on the AT 😁)

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at Deep Gap Shelter?

Deep Gap Shelter offers several practical amenities for hikers on the Appalachian Trail. The shelter features a bear box for secure food storage, which is essential for preventing wildlife encounters. There's convenient water access located nearby, making it easy to refill supplies. Hikers will also appreciate the fire pit for cooking and warmth during cooler evenings. The shelter itself provides good protection from the elements, keeping occupants dry during rainstorms. As with many AT shelters, expect the company of resident mice, which is typical along the trail.

Where is Deep Gap Campground located?

Deep Gap Shelter is located along the Appalachian Trail, serving as a designated overnight spot for through-hikers and section hikers. It's situated in a forested area that provides natural shelter and access to water sources. The shelter is positioned at a gap in the mountains, which is typical of many shelters along the AT that are strategically placed near mountain passes. For specific directions and GPS coordinates, hikers should consult current AT trail guides or maps from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

Is Deep Gap Campground on the Appalachian Trail?

Yes, Deep Gap Shelter is directly on the Appalachian Trail. It serves as one of the many designated shelters that dot the AT's 2,190+ mile route from Georgia to Maine. These shelters are typically spaced a day's hike apart and provide important waypoints and overnight accommodations for hikers traversing this iconic long-distance trail.

Do I need reservations for Deep Gap Campground?

No reservations are needed for Deep Gap Shelter, as it operates on a first-come, first-served basis like most Appalachian Trail shelters. During peak hiking season (spring through fall), the shelter may fill up quickly, especially on weekends or during popular through-hiking periods. Plan to arrive early or be prepared with a tent or hammock as backup. Some sections of the AT may require permits for overnight stays, so check with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy for any permit requirements specific to this section of trail.
