Positioned along US Highway 1 in the Florida Keys, Long Key State Park Campground occupies a narrow strip of land between the road and the Atlantic Ocean. This tent-only facility features just four campsites arranged side by side, each requiring a 100-yard walk across a boardwalk from the parking area to reach the camping area.
The sites sit directly on the waterfront, placing campers within 15 feet of the ocean's edge. This proximity allows for kayak launches straight from camp and wading in the shallow waters. However, the beaches here consist of muddy bottom rather than sand, limiting swimming opportunities. Traffic noise from US 1 carries across the campground throughout the night, as noted by multiple visitors.
Biting insects present a significant challenge, particularly no-see-ums that emerge during calm evening hours and persist through the night. "We were up basically all night itching and scratching," reports D C., who noted that bug spray provided little relief. Wildlife includes rats that scavenge for food scraps, with reports of them entering vehicles and damaging gear.
The facility provides clean restrooms with warm water but lacks lighting. For additional camping options in the Keys, consider Encore Fiesta Key just 2.6 miles northeast. Reservations fill quickly when available, though walk-up spots sometimes open due to cancellations.
