Beautiful spot - eaten alive by bugs, beware of rats

Beautiful little spot with only 4 sites, all of which are strangely side by side in this massive park and require a 100 yard walk across a boardwalk to get to from your car.  Setting up our tent we were attacked by noseeums, tiny little gnats whose bites turn into blisters for some (my daughter). The bugs went away when the wind picked up. We enjoyed being by the water, basically alone, watching the moon rise reflecting over the water.  We planned out our next day to make a trip to key west and return for our second night.  While preparing for bed, I found the washrooms didn’t have lights, not a huge issue. My wife saw a rat stealing some food wrappings, so be sure to clean up quickly.  Read other reviews of them getting into cars and chewing stuff up.  Come bed time, the noseeums were back with a vengeance, and they feasted on us. I bathed in deet bug spray to no avail. We were up basically all night itching and scratching and trying to covers ourselves in our sleeping bags. Woke up to find the only other camper had left, likely fed up with the bugs as well. We packed up and left early as well.  We went in early May, will never go back, but man that place would be nice without those bugs

This place is heaven

I love this place, it may be the best camping experience I ever had.  I loved unzipping my tent and being 15 feet away from the water.  It is difficult to get a site here, they go fast.  But I have had luck just showing up and getting in because someone else cancelled.

My Favorite Keys Campground

Long Key campground is positioned right next to US 1 so you can hear traffic throughout the night. This campground offers waterfront campsites that you can paddle from. The views are amazing. This campground was damaged by Irma and hasn’t been open for the last couple years.

it’s all yours

A nice little island which is all yours. We spent a week and enjoyed it. Watch for sand flees. They are bad and all over. The bathrooms are clean with warm water. Beaches aren’t really swim able. Mudy and not sandy.

My favorite sites

If you're looking for a view of the ocean this is the perfect place. The sites are literally on the beach. It's a great place to kayak or just lounge in the shallows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do visitors say about Long Key State Park in their reviews?

Long Key State Park offers exceptional oceanfront experiences with campsites directly on the beach. Campers highlight the stunning views and proximity to the water, with some sites just 15 feet from the shoreline. The park is praised as an excellent spot for kayaking, snorkeling, and lounging in the shallows. While the location receives high marks for its beauty and tranquility, visitors note that the beaches are more muddy than sandy and not ideal for swimming. Be prepared for no-see-ums and sand fleas, which can be problematic at times. The bathrooms are clean with warm water, and despite being close to US-1 with some traffic noise, many consider it among their best camping experiences.

What do the campsites at Long Key State Park look like?

The campsites at Long Key State Park are uniquely positioned right on the beach, offering immediate ocean access. Currently, the park has a limited number of tent-only sites that are arranged side by side. These sites require approximately a 100-yard walk across a boardwalk from the parking area to access. The camping area is spacious but compact in terms of site placement. Each site provides stunning views of the water, making it possible to unzip your tent and see the ocean just feet away. The setting is quiet and scenic, though minimalist. Facilities include clean bathrooms with warm water, and there are day-use areas for barbecues.

Where is Long Key State Park located in Florida?

Long Key State Park is located in the Florida Keys, positioned along US Highway 1 (the Overseas Highway). It sits on Long Key island, which is situated between Islamorada and Marathon. The park provides a convenient stopping point for travelers driving to Key West. Its oceanfront location makes it a strategic base for exploring the middle Keys region. The park's position directly adjacent to US-1 means easy access but also some traffic noise during your stay.

How do I make camping reservations at Long Key State Park?

Reservations for Long Key State Park are in high demand and should be made well in advance as sites fill up quickly. The park currently has a limited number of tent-only sites available. To secure a spot, make reservations through the Florida State Parks reservation system online or by phone. While walk-up reservations might occasionally be possible due to cancellations, this shouldn't be relied upon. Contact the park directly or visit the Florida State Parks website for the most current reservation policies, fees, and availability. Verify all details before your trip as campground status has changed over time due to hurricane damage and ongoing restoration efforts.
