Backcountry Shark Point Chickee — Everglades National Park

To reserve Shark Point Chickee, you must obtain a backcountry permit through Everglades National Park. Permits can be secured in person at the Flamingo Visitor Center or Gulf Coast Visitor Center. For overnight stays, the permit must be obtained no more than 24 hours in advance of your trip. During peak season (November through April), chickees are in high demand, so arriving early to secure your permit is recommended. The number of campers per chickee is limited, and reservations are first-come, first-served. Contact the park directly for current permit fees and availability.

Shark Point Chickee is accessible only by watercraft, typically requiring a 3-4 hour paddle from the Flamingo launch area. Navigation considerations include planning around tides—paddling with the tide significantly reduces effort. Be aware of mud banks that become exposed during low tide which can impede progress. Bring detailed nautical charts and a GPS device as the chickee can be challenging to locate in the maze of mangrove islands. Weather conditions can change rapidly, so check forecasts before departing. Strong winds can make paddling difficult and create choppy waters. Ensure you have sufficient water, sun protection, and supplies for the journey, as your arms will get a serious workout during the paddle.

A chickee at Shark Point is an elevated wooden platform built over water in Everglades National Park. Unlike regular ground camping, chickees keep you safely above the water and away from wildlife. There's typically a portable toilet on the platform. No fresh water, electricity, or other facilities are available, so you must bring everything you need. Pack all necessary supplies including drinking water, food, sleeping pad, tent (which can be set up on the platform for bug protection), sunscreen, and waste disposal bags. Pack out all trash as there are no garbage facilities. The isolation is part of the appeal—you'll likely have the entire chickee to yourself.
