    Overview

Elwood Cabin sits in a saddle along the San Juan Mountains overlooking an open meadow, offering guests a unique lodging opportunity. The cabin was built in 1911 by the Mountain States Telephone Company as a "line shack" to support crews maintaining the transcontinental telephone line. Remnants of this old telephone line are still found along Iron Creek to the southeast. The cabin was also used as a Forest Service Station from 1950 until 1962, serving as living quarters for Forest Service employees who worked on numerous projects in the area.Although the phone line has been abandoned, today the cabin is a high-altitude getaway for guests seeking relaxation and recreation in south-central Colorado. During summer months the cabin can be accessed by motorized travel. During winter months access to the cabin is by snowmobiles, cross country skiing or snow shoeing.

    Recreation

The area around Elwood cabin offers a variety of recreational opportunities year-round. Summertime brings excellent scenic tour opportunities in and around the Summitville area as well as exploration of several historical mining sites. Anglers have a spectacular backdrop to fishing streams such as Iron Creek or Treasure Creek. Nearby Platoro Reservoir, which feeds the Conejos River, provides excellent fishing for trout and salmon. Great hiking can be found around the area, as it spans both the Rio Grande and San Juan National Forests, as well as the South San Juan Wilderness. In winter, the Elwood cabin area can be blanketed with as much as ten feet of snow, requiring preparation and knowledge of winter travel. Snowmobiling, skiing and snowshoeing are popular activities in the area.

    Natural Features

High in the San Juan Mountains at an elevation of 11,000 feet, this cabin provides guests with views of nearby peaks, meadows filled with wildflowers and alpine forests. While staying at such a high elevation guests will notice how light plays differently on the landscape and stars blanket the sky on clear cold evenings. Elk, deer, and other wildlife are often seen in meadows adjacent to the cabin. Bear, marmot and chipmunks also call the area home.

    Nearby Attractions

Summitville is a nearby ghost town where gold was first discovered in 1870, then mined until the early 1990s. When contaminants leaked off-site and flowed into the local watershed the government forced it to shut down. Now a water treatment plant is on the site as part of a federal clean up program.

The Last Resort RV Park & Campground

    Excellent private campground for tenting

We enjoy tenting in relatively primitive national forests and usually avoid private campgrounds. But our friends recommended Last Resort on the River, and we were pleasantly surprised. The tent sites are separated from the RV sites in a forested area along the river. We shared a campsite on the river that had lots of trees and plenty of room for two tents and a canopy. Several other tent sites are carved out of the brush along the river. This makes a very nice setting with lots of privacy. The sound of the river is soothing and there was very little sound from the road.

It was a short walk to the amenities of the campground. There is a picnic shelter where we sat out a rainstorm, a very nice bathhouse for showering and washing dishes, as well as a comfortable indoor sitting area and another outdoor area with chairs and a fire pit. Ice and firewood are available at the office. Rich delivered them to our site. There are also some ice cream treats there and a few snacks. There is a fishing pond and a volleyball court. The rabbit hutch would have entertained the kids, if we had any with us.

There is no cell service, but the wifi was excellent and reached our campsite on the river. My wife was able to participate in a Zoom meeting from the picnic shelter where there was a convenient electrical outlet for her computer.

Rich is continually upgrading the property. He was very responsive and always willing to help. We highly recommend this campground.

    Owner was rude and unprofessional

We just got home from a 3 night stay. The resort was clean and Linda was very nice in checking us in. Friday night however I assume it was Allen that was very rude, disrespectful and unprofessional. We were sitting by the fire pit with friends. After having to find the firewood and build the fire ourselves. (The owners are supposed to do it nightly). Our friends had their dog leashed and laying under their chair. Apparently dogs aren't ok in the fire pit area. You can see from the attached photo this is not clear at all. Either way we were the only ones there and the dog was not hurting anything. Suddenly this man comes in, brings a sign with him that says no dogs on the grass, holds it up in front of us and loudly says "Can't you read?!". We promptly apologized for the misunderstanding and our friend took the dog to the camper. I can only assume this was Allen because he did not introduce himself or tell us who he was in any way. Just rudely insulted us and then proceeded to tell us he wanted us to leave right now. Well it was late, dark and we paid for our space and had no intention of leaving. The next night the fire pit had plywood covering it saying it was closed. So we could not enjoy a fire on our last night there. If this was Allen, he was rude, unprofessional and insulting. Nobody deserves to be treated that way, much less paying customers who were doing nothing wrong other than possibly misunderstanding the misleading signage. We will not be back and would not recommend! As a business owner myself I know how to treat customers and this isn't it!

Would be 5 stars, except....Deer flies!!!

Stunning spot, lots of tent sites, room for maybe 12 campers of modest length, mine is 26' spot #9 is prime for a camper with a driver side slide/kitchen table. unknown if it's seasonal but the biting flies, primarily deer flies are beyond bearable, I survived 4 days, most other campers left after one night. The camp host is very friendly, and knows the best fishing holes.

Good. There are trees and mountains, lakes ,and trails.

The campsites are level and easy to get to.  Most face the two stocked lakes. Near lake city and all the fun activities that the area has to offer. Wildlife, trails, and 4 wheeling. Fishing on site or go ask Dan at his fly shop for nearby streams and lake.  Bathrooms and laundry were clean. There are cabins but did not see inside.

Cozy little campground on the edge of town

Beautiful little park, well-maintained. I would emphasize little-- my rig fit fine, but some of the larger rigs had a harder time getting in and out. Probably should check with the campground. Laundry had just a couple of machines, but was nice and clean. The hosts/owners were very friendly and helpful. I loved waking up in the morning to see 6 deer grazing outside my window. Location is perfect, between historic downtown and the uptown stores(Walmart, City Market, gas). My only complaint was with the entry-- the park is tucked behind a business and you have to cross the lot to get to the entrance/exit. It, like many places in Pagosa Springs, was full of potholes, giving my trailer a good bit of bounce coming and going.

Pagosa Springs Riverside Campground is a super sweet spot

Located close to town off an easily acsessable road, is lakeside and riverside, offering a very peaceful vibe. The hosts were the kindest people, I was treated with "We're glad to have you, thank you for coming to stay." The amenities were plentiful with 24/7 laundry room, showers, bathrooms, hookups, dumps station and general store. Our site E was for camping, but could fit our 22' Sprinter van so to open our slider to the lake. Across the lake is a great little path with the gushing river on the other side, perfect taking the pups for a walk. They even have riverside benches to sit and enjoy the surroundings. We would visit repeatedly if in the area. Great find.

    Happy Camper RV Park

    Not ideal

Stayed here as a lot of dispersed spots were closed due to snow. It’s one of the only year round parks in the area that had availability. I stayed toward the back, multiple trashy campers, no rules so people were running in and out of the park at all hours of the night. Loud music and arguing constantly from this one camper. it was hard to get some sleep as it would sound like people were talking right outside our camper. The only nice part about the area was the river behind the campground, however, it’s definitely not worth $45/night.

Friendly staff, clean facilities, affordable, HUGE hot spring fed pool, a nice grill with delicious food and beverages. Our campsite had epic views. South Fork Lodge & RV Park

Gravel pit, no bathroom, no amenities, ATV heavy

This is been one of my least favorite spots to stay thus far. This park has no bathrooms, no laundry, no fire pits… Nothing but a picnic table. It is fully gravel, sites weren’t level, and very loud early mornings with all of the ATV activity. I think it is far too expensive for the stay. The staff is nice, and it’s family owned—but everything else, including the location pretty much sucked. I really think it’s worth it to find another park around the area to stay.

We had full hook ups. WiFi didn’t work and no Phone service.

    Nice spot

Tent sites were very close together but no one was next to us. Bathrooms close but just Porta potties. Showers you have to pay. Nice place we enjoyed it but there was a screaming baby all night long. Loud neighbors were expected camping in a resort like this those. Great place to stay unless you want a more nature camping experience.
