Mayflower Gulch

Mayflower Gulch offers excellent hiking opportunities right from your campsite. The main Mayflower Gulch Trail (approximately 2.5 miles round trip) leads to historic mining ruins and offers spectacular alpine views. More adventurous hikers can continue beyond to explore Pacific Peak or Crystal Peak. The nearby Colorado Trail provides longer distance options, while several unmarked social trails branch throughout the area. The hiking season typically runs from June through September, with wildflowers peaking in July and early August. Bring a map as some trails are not well-marked.

The road to Mayflower Gulch is very rough with numerous washouts and uneven terrain. High-clearance 4WD vehicles are strongly recommended, especially after rain or snowmelt when conditions worsen. The access road can be challenging even for experienced off-road drivers. Passenger cars may struggle to reach the camping areas, particularly in the spring when runoff creates deeper ruts. Always check current conditions before attempting the drive, and consider parking at lower elevations if you're uncertain about your vehicle's capabilities.

Campers should follow standard dispersed camping regulations including camping at least 100 feet from water sources, staying in previously used sites when possible, and practicing Leave No Trace principles.
