LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

A must do! Soak in the mineral, spring fed hot waters at Hooper hot springs and pool. Great for families and also offers a 21+ only section in a large beautiful greenhouse with a bar and grill. Offers showers and laundry facilities.

There are also 2 other hot springs a bit further down the valley, including, Joyful journey Hot springs and Spa and the Orient Land Trust (clothing optional at all times)

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve’s visitor center-to learn how these seemingly inexplicable dunes — North America’s tallest and one of the newest Dark Sky Parks, as rated by the International Dark-Sky Association for excellent stargazing opportunities — came to nestle against the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Then, play on Colorado’s most unique “beach” — Medano Creek; and check out Zapata Falls, a cool respite in the summer and a giant ice sculpture in the winter.

Blanca Vista Park is a locals’ favorite for its picnic areas, wildlife spotting, well-maintained singletrack trails for mountain biking and views of the Great Sand Dunes from the park’s Crestone Trail.

Detour to Hwy. 17 and check out two unusual spots:

Colorado Gators Reptile Park, where you can see and even handle some of the more than 300 alligators and other scaly critters; and the UFO Watchtower, a local attraction providing information on the valley’s surprising number of UFO sightings.

To many American Indians, Mount Blanca is sacred ground. At 14,345 feet — the fourth-highest peak in Colorado — Mount Blanca watches over the sunny community that shares its name.

Blanca provides a welcome stop along the Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic Byway, a driving tour tying together several small towns, old military forts, Colorado's oldest church and plenty of friendly residents. Blanca sits just west of the preserved Fort Garland, once commanded by famed frontiersman Kit Carson. Today, visitors can explore the fort's adobe buildings and the parade ground. Permanent exhibits focus on black soldiers in the military and the varied careers — including scout, government courier, Indian agent and soldier — of the legendary Kit Carson.
