Free dispersed camping along South Mineral Creek requires some preparation before arrival. FSR 585 off Highway 550 north of Silverton climbs into high mountain basins, and the approach crosses at least one mountain pass. Drivers towing trailers should confirm their brakes are in good working order and plan to use low gears on the descent. The road sits along the famous Million Dollar Highway, which includes steep drop-offs and no margin for error.
Sites are covered in river rock and nothing levels out naturally, so leveling gear is worth bringing. Several spots sit directly alongside the creek, though the water runs glacial cold and is not suitable for swimming. Generators run throughout the day and into the night, which is worth knowing for light sleepers. A vault toilet is on-site; bring your own toilet paper. There is no hookups, no potable water, and no dump station. Cell coverage is limited, though some reviewers found T-Mobile 5G workable and Starlink reliable.
Nearby trails give campers access to several routes of varying difficulty, including the Ice Lake trailhead. Golden Hour Dispersed, Sultan Dispersed, and South Mineral Road Dispersed - San Juan NF are all within a half mile, giving the corridor a high campground density that fills quickly in July. As Tyler S. notes, "you are up in the mountain basins here." The 14-day stay limit is posted and enforced by other campers if not always by rangers. Silverton, a short drive away, has a grocery store, public showers, and resupply options for those planning a longer stay in the area.
Description
Dispersed camping is a great way to enjoy the experience of camping away from developed campgrounds. Keep in mind, there are no picnic tables, drinking water, or toilets available.
