Solid spot

Good spot, lots of space, many have fire rings built. Road is a bit bumpy but nothing you’d need 4wd or clearance for.

Large area close to town

I don’t mind sharing how great this place is because it’s absolutely massive! Tons of space to park, 5 min from town, good service and great views. Don’t even have to leave to bike around or go to the lake.

Awesome spot with beautiful mountain and forest views and close to a lake

We pulled in around 4pm on a Sunday. We went to the 3rd dirt road on the left to find a spot available. Only one other camper was there and the area could easily accommodate 4 without being too close to each others. Very easy to find. To the north Turquoise Lake is 1/2 mile away. There are mountain bike /hiking trails everywhere around the lake. Even though the space we were in was very spacious it felt secluded and we really could not see the other RV. We pulled our 40 feet toy hauler easily. The spot was leveled and clean. A stone fire pit was there and lots of wood had been left by the previous campers.

Good diseased camping lots of space

Can’t get too far off main road due to snow this early in the season. Road rutted and bumpy but made it about 500 yards back in my prius. Could go farther back in 4x4 despite snow. Several other people. lots of open space and spots to choose from. especially once snow melts more. Be careful of mud- if you are worried i would walk down the road a bit to check it out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dispersed camping allowed at Turquoise Lake?

While Turquoise Lake itself has designated campgrounds, dispersed camping is available nearby at FR 48 Dispersed Camping, which is only about half a mile from Turquoise Lake. This area provides free dispersed camping options with plenty of space between sites. FR 48 offers numerous spots with established fire rings and easy access to the lake for recreation. Keep in mind that early in the season, snow may limit how far back you can camp from the main road, but the area opens up significantly once the snow melts.

Where can I find a map of Turquoise Lake camping areas?

Maps of Turquoise Lake camping areas can be obtained from the Leadville Ranger District office or the San Isabel National Forest visitor centers. The USFS website also provides downloadable maps of the area. Additionally, the entrance to FR 48 Dispersed Camping is marked with dirt roads branching off to various camping spots - the third dirt road on the left is particularly good for finding available sites. For the most current and detailed maps, stop by the Forest Service office in Leadville before your trip.

Is there BLM camping near Leadville close to Turquoise Lake?

Yes, FR 48 Dispersed Camping provides free camping options just minutes from Leadville and very close to Turquoise Lake. While this is National Forest land rather than BLM, it offers the same dispersed camping experience many seek on public lands. The area is massive with tons of space to park, good cell service, and great views. It's only about 5 minutes from town, making it convenient for supplies, while still providing easy access to Turquoise Lake for recreation. The access road is somewhat bumpy but generally accessible without requiring 4WD or high clearance vehicles.
