Dispersed Camping

Halfmoon Creek South

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Halfmoon Creek South, near Leadville, Colorado, is a dispersed camping area that offers a rugged outdoor experience for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle. With a mix of tent and RV sites, it’s a popular spot for campers who enjoy the freedom of choosing their own space in nature.

This location is known for its beautiful creek and surrounding pine trees, making it a picturesque backdrop for your camping adventure. Visitors have noted that while the area can get busy, especially on weekends, there are still secluded spots to be found if you venture further back along the road. As one camper mentioned, “If you follow the road all the way back, there is a high clearance vehicle road with some pretty amazing spots!”

While amenities are limited—there’s no drinking water or electric hookups—campers appreciate the allowance for campfires, which adds to the cozy atmosphere of evenings spent under the stars. Just be prepared for some noise, as the area sees a lot of traffic from hikers heading to nearby trails, particularly for those tackling Mt. Massive.

For those who enjoy hiking and exploring, Halfmoon Creek South is a great base to access various trails in the region. Whether you’re looking to relax by the creek or embark on a hiking adventure, this area has its charms for those willing to embrace a more rustic camping experience.

Fire looking for a place to happen

This entire area all the way to the trail head is awful. It is so crowded and worn out. The cars are lined up along the road for miles. People rushing up and down without regard for anyone else's safety. All I see is no water except in the creek for anyone to use or put out campfires. Which are all over the place. People pulling in and making camp rings I places they are not supposed to. To many in each camp. This area needs to be shut down and reworked. Don't go here.

Crowded and noisy

This dispersed area has plenty of options, but it does fill up quickly on weekends.  There is constant traffic 24x7 to the multiple trailheads and campgrounds farther up the road.   Select a spot away from the road or you will be subjected to traffic all night long.  We will not stay in this area of Halfmoon again... perhaps farther up the road past the 14er trailheads.

Crowded but comfortable

This dispersed campground is a great place to camp if you are in the Leadville area. It has plenty of sites and we didn’t have trouble finding one, even though we didn’t get to the area until Saturday afternoon of Labor Day Weekend.

The only downside is it was noisier that we expected. There are cars on the road pretty much 24/7 (lots of people coming through in the early morning hours to hike Mt. Massive). The sites are also somewhat close together so we could hear our neighbors at times. But the positives outweighed the downside in my opinion. I also imagine it would be less busy on a non-holiday weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dispersed camping rules and regulations apply at Halfmoon Creek?

At Halfmoon Creek dispersed camping, standard Forest Service regulations apply. Campers must practice Leave No Trace principles and properly extinguish all campfires. There are no water sources except the creek, so bring your own water for drinking and fire safety. The area has become heavily used, so respect existing fire rings and avoid creating new impact areas. Pack out all trash and waste. Sites are first-come, first-served with no reservations or fees, but the area fills quickly on weekends and holidays. Stays are typically limited to 14 days.

What road conditions should I expect on Halfmoon Creek Road when accessing dispersed camping?

Halfmoon Creek Road starts as a maintained dirt road suitable for most vehicles but gradually becomes rougher as you progress. While the main access road is generally passable for standard vehicles, the farther sections require higher clearance, especially if you want to access the premium camping spots toward the back of the area. During peak times, expect heavy traffic with vehicles constantly moving up and down the road. The road can get dusty in dry conditions, and spots closer to the road will experience more noise from passing traffic.

Where is Halfmoon Creek dispersed camping located near Leadville, Colorado?

Halfmoon Creek dispersed camping is located just outside Leadville, Colorado. Follow Google Maps directions to the general area, then continue along Halfmoon Creek Road. The dispersed camping area extends along this road with sites visible from the main access route. For more secluded spots, continue all the way to the back of the area where a high-clearance vehicle road leads to some particularly scenic camping locations. The area provides access to multiple trailheads in the surrounding mountains.

What's the difference between Halfmoon Creek dispersed camping and Halfmoon Creek Campground?

Halfmoon Creek dispersed camping consists of informal sites spread throughout the area with no amenities or services, while Halfmoon Creek Campground is a developed facility farther up the road with designated sites and potentially more amenities. The dispersed area offers plenty of camping options with more flexibility in site selection but fills up quickly on weekends. Unlike the established campground, the dispersed area experiences constant traffic to multiple trailheads and campgrounds farther up the road, making it generally noisier than the main campground.
