Dispersed Camping

Halfmoon Creek South

Halfmoon Creek South, near Leadville, Colorado, is a dispersed camping area that offers a rugged outdoor experience for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle. With a mix of tent and RV sites, it’s a popular spot for campers who enjoy the freedom of choosing their own space in nature.

This location is known for its beautiful creek and surrounding pine trees, making it a picturesque backdrop for your camping adventure. Visitors have noted that while the area can get busy, especially on weekends, there are still secluded spots to be found if you venture further back along the road. As one camper mentioned, “If you follow the road all the way back, there is a high clearance vehicle road with some pretty amazing spots!”

While amenities are limited—there’s no drinking water or electric hookups—campers appreciate the allowance for campfires, which adds to the cozy atmosphere of evenings spent under the stars. Just be prepared for some noise, as the area sees a lot of traffic from hikers heading to nearby trails, particularly for those tackling Mt. Massive.

For those who enjoy hiking and exploring, Halfmoon Creek South is a great base to access various trails in the region. Whether you’re looking to relax by the creek or embark on a hiking adventure, this area has its charms for those willing to embrace a more rustic camping experience.

Fire looking for a place to happen

This entire area all the way to the trail head is awful. It is so crowded and worn out. The cars are lined up along the road for miles. People rushing up and down without regard for anyone else's safety. All I see is no water except in the creek for anyone to use or put out campfires. Which are all over the place. People pulling in and making camp rings I places they are not supposed to. To many in each camp. This area needs to be shut down and reworked. Don't go here.

Crowded and noisy

This dispersed area has plenty of options, but it does fill up quickly on weekends.  There is constant traffic 24x7 to the multiple trailheads and campgrounds farther up the road.   Select a spot away from the road or you will be subjected to traffic all night long.  We will not stay in this area of Halfmoon again... perhaps farther up the road past the 14er trailheads.

Crowded but comfortable

This dispersed campground is a great place to camp if you are in the Leadville area. It has plenty of sites and we didn’t have trouble finding one, even though we didn’t get to the area until Saturday afternoon of Labor Day Weekend.

The only downside is it was noisier that we expected. There are cars on the road pretty much 24/7 (lots of people coming through in the early morning hours to hike Mt. Massive). The sites are also somewhat close together so we could hear our neighbors at times. But the positives outweighed the downside in my opinion. I also imagine it would be less busy on a non-holiday weekend.
