Sugar Loafin' RV/Campground & Cabins

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Dark skies over the San Isabel National Forest and the low hum of Turquoise Lake nearby set the tone at Sugar Loafin' RV/Campground & Cabins, a privately run campground on the western edge of Leadville, Colorado. Sitting at high elevation, the campground is forested along its edges, with outer sites giving more breathing room and open sightlines toward the surrounding terrain. Kurt K. sums it up well: "Nights are very quiet and huge dark sky to gaze at the stars."

Sites vary noticeably in quality. Reviewers consistently recommend checking the map before booking, since outer-edge spots provide more space and better views, while interior sites can feel close together. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table, and full hookups are available, including electric, water, and sewer, with a dump station on-site. The campground accommodates RVs up to 50 feet. Staff are frequently praised for guiding campers to their specific spots and helping with parking, a practical detail that matters on tighter interior sites.

The bathhouse earns consistent high marks across multiple reviews. Showers are private, well-lit, and described as clean and modern. A small general store covers emergency supplies, and the campground also has laundry machines, though early-season visitors note these may be out of service until the site fully opens. Propane refills are available. The playground has received some criticism for needing attention.

Weather at this elevation can shift fast. One camper arrived to 50-degree temperatures and woke to four inches of snow. Come prepared for cold nights regardless of the season, and note that the campground closes for winter. Reservations are accepted, and pets are welcome, with a large open field nearby for dogs to run. FR 48 Dispersed Camping is less than half a mile away for campers who prefer a more primitive setup without hookups.

Early season means snow is guaranteed

Great site! They helped us refill propane and guided us to our specific site. Laundry machines are down likely due to it being early season and needing upkeep, we were one of only 3 campers in the lot being that it was still so early. Woke up to 4” of snow overnight (it was 50 the night prior). General store and bathrooms are well equipped and you are right next to turquoise lake. Leadville is a fun town and we never leave feeling disappointed!

Clean campground

Very convenient to trails. The kids play area needed attention. The restrooms were very clean. Helpful staff lead us to our spot and helped us park.

Right on Leadville 100

Campground is right on the Leadville 100 race course.

Perfect place to train for the race or relive past races.

Great place for dogs.

Some campsites and way better then others so look at map first.

Super helpful staff.

Mind when you need laundry, can get very backed up.

Cool Little RV Park

The sites were a bit small but full hook ups with a lodge and general store on-site. Only about 5 minute drive the lake and Leadville.

Friendly, clean, picturesque

We rocked up in our small RV without a reservation (on a Monday) and had a few spots to choose from. Super friendly staff. Clean bathrooms & showers. Beautiful scenery.

Love this place!

Sugar Loafin was the only campground open in this area . They were getting ready to close down for the season but let is stay. The price was $38 per night.. The campsites have water and electric. They are big enough to accommodate our 12x14 wall tent. The bathrooms are clean, have private showers, well lit at night and surprisingly modern. It's very quiet here at night with some traffic sounds during the day. All in all...I highly recommend this campground!

Great last minute camp near Leadville

We were tent camping on motorcycles and rode into Leadville late in the evening. This campground was open (with staff) late, and were very friendly and accommodating. A very nice camp with everything we needed. They had tent pads that were flat and soft. We just barely missed the ice cream social. We will visit again.

Awesome campground

Our first time in Colorado. The campground was great! It has water and electric, a clean bathhouse and a laundry room. They have a campstore in case you need anything. The playground was closed due to Covid-19. We were only able to stay two nights or of the five I reserved. Being from Alabama, I couldn't handle the snow in June while in a tent.

Such friendly staff and great location

My partner a I stayed at Sugar Loafin' a handful of times this summer and always had a good experience. Please keep masks on is my one criticism, but staff was very friendly and held some packages for us numerous times. They have a cute shop and good deals. Very close to leadville and turquoise lake. Our pups loved it here too!

Little gem close to Leadville

Tucked up on the edge of the woods this little gem is only 3 miles from Leadville. The outer edge sites are far better for views and space but even the site in middle are spaced out enough to have table and fire pit in each spot. The little general store is sparse but has emergency stuff and folks are really nice. They have shower house and bathroom and a huge field next door for the dogs to run. Nights are very quiet and huge dark sky to gaze at the stars.

Great campground if you need water and electricity

I usually prefer camping more primitive but we needed electricity for a friend's CPAP. The amenities are great, very clean showers and bathrooms. Nice little store on the facility. Sites are tight to each other and dirty and unkept in my opinion. But if you are just needing a place to crash as we were while we spent the days offroading, it works. A bonus is that they offer an all you can eat ice cream buffet every evening. We would stay again if we had similar needs.

Camping in Leadville, CO

Nice campground in Leadville about a 10 minute drive from town. They have a general store, water spout at each site, decent bathrooms & free showers. The tent sites are a little close together and parking is limited if you have more than 1 vehicle. Overall a great spot to camp if you are hiking/exploring Leadville.
